Yes Free Cone

There are not many things ES gets more excited about than the possibility of a progressive president, but chocolate chip cookie dough is definitely one of them.

So we’re pretty excited to tell you that everyone’s favorite hefty hippies, Ben and Jerry, are celebrating Election Day by offering voters a free scoop of ice cream on Tuesday evening.

Remember, vote first. Then ice cream.

Hott Link: Keeping Love Local

[youtube ZIbB8f6CIBs]

Now ES has surely given you recipe advice, political advice and feminism advice,  but one thing we haven’t really lectured about was your love life.  Slate, however, gave us an in: humans should be dating locally just as much as they are eating locally.  (No offense BS and Alex!)

The same type of environmental logic has already been applied to our eating habits. The Local Food movement encourages us to cut CO2 emissions by calculating food miles—the distance a meal travels from production to the dinner table—and eating only what’s produced within a 100-mile radius. Isn’t it time for a Date Local movement, too? Let’s start thinking about “sex miles”: Just how far was this person shipped to hook up with you? And how many times more efficient would it be to date someone within a 100-mile radius?

So while you’re slutting it up this Halloween, remember, you’re doing the world a huge eco-favor by getting your ass locally.

Tuesdays for Cocktails

So for my last dining package, I decided to try the new restaurant/bar Commissary, from the group that also owns The Heights.  And you know how I feel about The Heights.  But, hey, the food looked okay, so I invited belmontmedina along to help me review their Happy Hour specials.

Well, I get there first and I’m greeted by these two women:

women: are you here for an “event” ??

me: no

women: the place is closed to the public until 8, but if you would like to talk to the hostess, she’s inside.

me: okay… thanks. [in my head: FUCK!]

So now I call BS and ask what I should do.  This is the ONLY night I have free to check out this place (because I’m a huge procrastinator, I was right up to my deadline.)  And I don’t want to pull the whole *I’m press, I need to get in there STAT* thing.  But, really, there’s no other choice.  Ugh.

Top Chef NYC starts in just three weeks! If you don’t believe us, just check out hostrix Padma Lakshmi seductively eating a street pretzel in the video above.

And if you can’t wait to find out about the new cheftestants, you can meet them all in person, this Monday at the “Taste of the Five Boroughs” event in New York’s Grand Central Station. Padma herself will be there, along with Tom C. and Gail Simmons. And of course, ES will be there!

Hott Link: RIP Zima

zima-clearmalt-bottle.jpg It’s been a rough week for drunk eaters. First we lost the Nacho Queen, now comes   word  that Zima, the clear, bubbly “malternative” beverage that launched a thousand imitators and a million drunk teenagers, will be no more:

The joint venture between SABMiller’s U.S. unit and Molson Coors Brewing Co. told distributors in a letter Monday that production of the malt liquor beverage was discontinued as of Oct. 10…

If you’re feeling really desperate, now is the time to stock up…

Distributors can get remaining Zima inventories most likely through December.

After that, Zima will be retired to heaven, to mix blissfully with Crystal Pepsi.

As clear nacho fans, Endless Simmer wishes to celebrate the life of Carmen Rocha, the woman credited with bringing this staple snack to gringos everywhere:

For a special treat Rocha sometimes went into the kitchen and made her customers an order of nachos, an item not included on the menu. She followed a recipe she learned in San Antonio, where she grew up, layering tortilla wedges, shredded cheddar cheese and slices of jalapeño pepper, warming the dish in the oven. Before long she had requests from all over the dining room and her nachos were added to the menu.

Thank you, Carmen, for showing the world that melted cheese truly changes lives.
