A Midsummer Afternoon’s Snack

peach-blackberry-banana-smoothie-1-600-x-411.jpg

Over the weekend I performed some major procrastination (including this post.) It was my monthly I’m-grounded-I-have-4-articles-due-on-Monday weekend. So instead of writing, I spent a lot of time in the kitchen. I’ll be sure to post about my big baking adventure, but my afternoon snack’s success really made me proud.

In the morning I made my weekly trip to the farmers market and picked up peaches, blackberries and yogurt (among millions of other produce). The dairy stand is where it’s at! Oh, and let me make this clear – I hate yogurt. But, and I’m not kidding, tasting so much genuine frozen yogurt prepped me for the real stuff. And, the Keswick Creamery stand offers plenty of samples (!) so I decided to try their version:

Snacks CAN make you a Doctor!

snacks.JPG

Thank you to everyone for your fabulous snack ideas for Matt’s PhD proposal exam, which he PASSED!!! He is now officially on his way to being Dr. Matt! He he he!

So after I wrote the last post, I got word that the snacks needed to be more lunch-oriented, but thanks to ES this was no problem! I decided to make Gansie’s Power Snacks, which includes Roasted Poblano Pepper Dip, Rosemary and Garlic Olives, and Mustard and Horseradish Egg Salad Toasts. I also made Gansie’s Chickpea and Artichoke, and Roasted Red Pepper Crostini. Then I cut up cucumbers and made pita chips by baking mini whole wheat pitas. Now remember, I’m the microwave expert here, so these were very challenging choices for me!

Eats of Glory: Top Ten Olympic Foods

As you probably know if you aren’t living under an extraordinarily large rock, it’s Olympics time! Around here, that means one thing: Carb-loading. No, we’re not running the Olympic marathon, we’re merely preparing to stuff our faces while watching the Dream Team play inexplicably mediocre basketball, witness 15-year-old Russian girls twist themselves into unnatural positions, and see athletes from around the globe keel over from pollution inhalation. Now that’s gonna take some serious energy. On our part. Can we say take-out? Here’e a look at our Top Ten Olympic Carb-Loading Foods:

10. Toasted Ravioli

The Italians may think they have a leg up on the competition with their gigantic pasta dishes, but we Americans took their pasta and made it our own. How? By breading it and deep-frying it, of course! The St. Louis chefs who invented this tastiness get bonus points for the creatively misleading naming. No one would be crazy enough to order something called fried, breaded ravioli. But toasted ravioli? Sign us up.

Estimated Carbs: 85 grams

9. Fried Chicken and Waffles

Who says carb-loading means you gotta give up meat? This Harlem classic gives you all the protein you need, and doesn’t skimp on the sugar. A giant waffle topped with fried chicken, gobs of syrup and butter. Can I get some toast with that?

Estimated Carbs: 100 grams

8. Cinnabon

What exactly is in a Cinnabon cinnamon roll, anyway? The official story is “warm dough filled with our legendary Makara cinnamon and topped with freshly made cream cheese frosting.” Now, I think we’ve all tasted cinnamon, dough and cream cheese before, and we know that Cinnabon tastes like none of these things. Every bite is so full of powerful, artificial sugar-y stuff that it’s hard to imagine how they get so much sickly-sweetness into such a small space. However they do it, they deserve an award.

Estimated Carbs: 115 g

7. Pina Colada

The great thing about mixing cocktails is you can always use a little less of the sweet stuff if you’re counting carbs. Unless you’re using exclusively sweet stuff, of course. Aaaah, the pina colada, a.k.a. adult candy in a glass. Start with a healthy dose of Malibu coconut rum (the kind that smells/tastes like sunblock), and mix with coconut cream and pineapple juice. Top that with a maraschino cherry and a wedge of pineapple. You should be in a coma for the rest of the Olympics.

Estimated Carbs: 120 g

6. Baked Ziti Pizza

You gotta love watching tourists come into New York pizzerias as their faces go “mmm…oh that looks nice…ok….interesting…WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?” And that’s when you know they’ve caught site of the baked ziti pizza. What a delicious and completely unnecessary invention. Hey, sometimes you can’t decide between pizza and pasta and you just want to eat an entire serving of pasta on top of a plate of pizza. What’s so wrong with that?

Estimated Carbs: 140 g

Doctorate in Snacks

36108499.jpg

I need your help!

My BF Matt is working on his Doctorate in Computer Engineering and has his PhD proposal exam next Thursday. This essentially means he has to talk and defend the last 4 years of his research (aka last 4 years of his LIFE) for 2 hours and then the committee either says, yes that’s good, go ahead and you will graduate or nope sorry we think that sucks – SO VERY STRESSFUL!

As if this wasn’t stressful enough, Matt informed me that he is expected to provide snacks and beverages for his committee! Can you F-ing believe that! The last thing you want to be thinking about is what food you are going to bring to impress these people!!

So I told him don’t worry, I’ll take care of the snacks. And I thought what better way to get ideas on what to make than from the ES community!

What are your ideas? It is at 10:30am, and I also need to have beverages, and most importantly, if they expect snacks, then I want them to have the best damn snacks they’ve EVER had!

Open Sesame

Chickpea Dip

When I was up in Maine 2 weeks ago visiting Rooms*, she took me to this totally kick-ass Asian market – Tran’s. I fucking love Tran’s. We combed through aisles of amazingness. Although I love my neighborhood Hispanic market, I’d totally welcome a Tran’s to the ‘hood.

Here’s the list of shit I stuffed into my suitcase, all $40 worth:

  • Noodles: Buckwheat, Udon, Corn
  • Oils: Sesame, Chili with chili flakes, Szechuan pepper
  • Curry Pastes: Penang, Red, Green
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Coconut Milk (Sure, I could get this in DC, but would it only be $1.29?)
  • Whole Peppercorn Blend (Huge container!)
  • Sesame Crisp Flakes (Haven’t tried yet, but it was a Rooms suggestion. It’s like a snack or something.)
  • Curry Powder (Indra brand)
  • Thai Coffee Grinds (Ingredients: roasted coffee beans, soybean, brown rice, caramel. Unfort, my last coffee maker got broken before I moved into my current apartment and because 80P doesn’t drink the Joe, I never ended up replacing it. Now though I really want a French Press – any suggestions on brands/sizes?)
  • Onion Flavored Naan (Who knew that naan is also an amazing vehicle for fried egg with cheddar cheese.)

I think that’s it, but maybe Rooms can correct me. Oh, and Tran’s also carries avocados, so really, it’s perfect. Now that I have all of these new Asian flavorings, I recently took an old standby and made it, um, Asiany. Wow, that’s incorrect.

Liza’s Tips to Eating #3: It Tastes Like a Rainbow

After a ridiculous night out on U Street a couple of months ago when BS came to visit DC, I not only thought it was a good idea to break out the video camera, but I also decided to introduce BS and Vi to an awesomely amazing snack staple of mine that I usually keep very secret: The Oscar Myer Microwavable CHEESE FILLED HOTDOG .

Now, I know what you’re thinking – how does such an awesome thing exist, and more importantly, HOW do I eat this, Liza? Never fear, here are my simple instructions, in video form:
