Looking For a Peanut Butter Facelift

DSC_0157

Sometimes a slight change transforms a meal. Take peanut butter and jelly. I used to hate jelly, therefore I only ate peanut butter…on a hamburger bun.  Soon I came around to jelly, creating a PB&J on rye. Then it turned into an open faced sandwich with peanut butter and mashed bananas on whole wheat. Sometimes I added potato chips.

And then I forgot about PB&J and PB&B. Tomatoes caught my eye all summer as the sandwich filler of choice. But now that it’s turning cold I crave something simple and familiar.

On the last day of the farmers’ market I purchased a farm-made grape jelly (without any corn syrup!) And to switch things up, I let the peanut butter melt into a warm and toasted raisin bagel and then topped it with jelly. 80 absolutely despised the warm peanut butter, linking it to some awful childhood memory of eating hot peanut butter on a rice cake. And I’d have to agree, rice cakes would leave me with nightmares as well. But I liked the extra creaminess the peanut took on as it was heated from the bagel.

But now I’m looking for another way to enhance a peanut butter sandwich. How do you up the PB&J ante?

I don’t know why but I was craving banana. I haven’t eaten a banana in a while. Oh wait. Actually, I had banana this weekend in my friend Raj’s birthday pie for his 30-year-old girlfriend’s birthday party: a pie filled with Nutella and topped in quarter-sections with strawberries, pretzels and chocolate chunks, apples and then bananas.

I ate a sliver of banana-topped Nutella pie. And it must of still been in my head come yesterday lunch; I craved a peanut butter and banana sandwich. I wanted a gooey mess of a sandwich. I’m sorry. I just did.

Unfortunately we didn’t have any bananas in the house. I sincerely love bananas but I rarely buy them anymore fearing its massive carbon footprint. So I did what I always do: make do.

icecream

My new favorite “I’m not having dessert, I’m just having a bite” snack.

Step 1: Cover half a spoon with chunky peanut butter. Don’t bring me any of that natural shit. The junky kind – like Skippy – is necessary here.

Step 2: Cover the other half of the spoon with Häagen Dazs vanilla ice cream.

Step 3: Eat.

Step 4: Try not to repeat. It’s difficult.

And yes, I know I could buy peanut butter ice cream. And no, it’s not the same.

Peanut Butter: A Revolutionary Divide

Would you like some oatmeal with that peanut butter?

My mom looked down at our floor and said, “What is that down there?” Yes, she had found our large box of peanut butter which we order in bulk online direct from the company. With the peanut butter scare a while back, you’d think that would decrease our peanut butter use, but we have a favorite company, which was not part of the scare, and so our habits continued. We go through about one small container of peanut butter per week – hence the need to buy in bulk. We put it in oatmeal in the morning, and admittedly, sometimes the oatmeal tastes more peanut buttery than oatmealy. Still working out the balance.

There have been two big peanut butter debates that I’m fascinated by:
