Bagels in the Land of Danes

In the tiny country of Denmark, best known for its abundance of slim dark bread, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw signs for bagels. During my four days in Copenhagen I ate plenty of browned rye bread—on its on, with butter, with garlic aioli, with smoked herring, with strong, old cheese—so please don’t judge me for wanting to see how the Danes produce this New Jersey staple.

We ordered The Bagel Co‘s version of an everything bagel, studded with pumpkin, sunflower, caraway and sesame seeds. While the crust was softer than I’d like, the crunch of the large seeds helped add that bit of texture that I crave with a bagel. But what I absolutely adored was the schmear: pesto cream cheese, lightly herbed and plenty creamy.

Summer Cocktails Gone Wild

When it gets this hot, sometimes a simple G&T or a frosty beer just isn’t enough. Fortunately, we’ve been amping up our cocktail repertoire all summer. Here are our seven favorite new-school summer cocktails.

1. Avocado Margarita

A tequila-heavy margarita is always refreshing, but even more so with a fresh avocado mixed in, a la this cocktail from Kim Haasarud’s 101 Mojitos and other Muddled Drinks.

2. The New Moscow Mule

We’re big fans of this ginger beer-based cocktail, but guess what’s even better? Ginger, and beer. Brennan Adams, the beverage director at El Centro, D.F. in Washington, D.C., makes this new take on the Mule, mixing ginger-chili simple syrup with vodka and lager.

Cocktail O’Clock: Guinness ‘n’ Gin

Solution #2 for how to drink dark beer in summer: mix it with gin!

The Black Friars Pint at The Fifth Floor in San Francisco has Plymouth Gin, Cardamom Spiced Guinness and East India Sherry, shaken with egg white and Angostura bitters.

(You may recall solution #1 was this beer float from Brooklyn’s 61 Local)

Fig and Clementine Port Wine Poptail

Fruit and wine—in a popsicle? Yep—it’s a ménage a trios for the hedonistic foodie.

Hitting the blender’s vortex this week is some dry port wine, figs, clementine tangerines and honey. We’ve have to admit, it seemed almost sacrilege to be pouring wine onto the blades of our poptail regulator. But a nano second later “almost” turned into a 2-cup pour.

We’re on a campaign to leave no alcohol behind, so stay tuned to find out what’s next on the poptail hit list. And remember, you can find all of our boozy ice pop concoctions in Endless Poptails.
