A Boozy Way to Drink Avocado
We are in no way obsessed. No really. We can surely go a day without dreaming about the luscious, creamy avocado and all of the ways to surrender to its perfection.
In case anyone else out there can’t get enough of the fruit, here’s another way to ingest it in liquid form. But this time, spiked with booze for a spin on a margarita. (Although I’m sure you haven’t tired from the chocolate avocado milkshake.)
Avo-Rita
Recipe from 101 Mojitos and other Muddled Drinks by Kim Haasarud (Wiley & Sons 2011).
1.5 oz 1800 Silver tequila
0.75 oz Cointreau
1.5 oz lime juice
1.5 oz agave nectar
Half a ripe avocado
2-3 sprigs of cilantro
Kosher salt / celery salt, for rim *
Lime wedge, for garnish
Kosher / Celery Salt Rim: In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of celery salt with 4 Tablespoons Kosher salt. Mix well. To rim the glass, wet outside of Margarita glass with lime wedge and dip into salt mixture. Set the glass aside.
In a mixing glass, muddle the avocado with the lime juice and agave nectar. Add the 1800 tequila and Cointreau. Top with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into ice-filled, salt-rimmed glass. Garnish with lime wedge and serve.

When you say strain, does this leave you with left over avocado or do you muddle enough for it to strain through into the glass?
I never make margaritas anymore without a little bit of jalapeno, but this is something I never would have thought of. …definitely trying this soon. Thanks!
If you aren’t putting a slice of jalapeno in your margaritas, try it.
A slice of jalapeno huh? I do love spicy stuff maybe I’ll have to try that. I have to say I have never thought of making an avocado margarita, but I don’t like sweet drinks so this may be perfect for me. I’m definitely going to have to give this a try.
Avo-Rita? What a fantastic idea and a new way to consume avocado. Would have never thought of this. Plan to try it for a social gathering, will be a conversation starter for sure. Thank you for sharing.
Interesting take on a margarita – willing to give it a go for sure =)
Hey what do you do with the cilantro???Garnish?? I think I will give it a try!
Sounds yummy! When you say 1/2 avocado, are you talking about the tiny wimpy grasy Haas, or the REAL big-ass FLORIDA avocados (note my bias here… ?)?? Makes a HUGE difference in the recipe yield
How do I get the recipe for the avocado drink
recipe is on this page!
With the exception of the tequila and Cointreau, I’d cut the other ingredients by 50%. The slice of jalapeño is a nice touch.
