Cocktail O’Clock: A White Christmas

Dreaming of snow this Christmas? Let coconut flakes stand in for the real stuff on top of your drink. If you get your guests boozed up enough, they may even think it’s snowing.

You could do this with pretty much any drink; Isaac Elbhar at Bryant Park Hotel Cellar Bar in New York offers it atop the Purple Snowflake Martini:

1 ½ oz of 44th Degree North (Huckleberry Vodka)
¾ oz of Cointreau
½ oz of Pineapple Juice
3 fresh blackberry
1 fresh squeeze of lemon juice
Coconut flakes
Pour all ingredients into shaker except the coconut flakes. Shake the concoction vigorously! Pour the mixture into a martini glass and top with coconut flakes.

Cocktail O’Clock: Happy Repeal Day

The worst thing about Monday is that even though it’s universally acknowledged as the hardest day of the week, it’s somehow also the one on which it’s least socially acceptable to drink.

But wait a minute — us boozehounds have the upper hand this week, because Monday marks the 78th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, which we’re pretty sure is a national holiday. Enjoy this original cocktail recipe — The Rodriguez Sour — from Kevin Diedrich of Jasper’s Corner Tap & Kitchen in San Francisco, or find your favorite poison in Endless Cocktails.

Rodriguez Sour

2 oz Partida Blanco tequila
.75 oz Lime
.75 oz Pineapple juice
.5 oz Jalapeno syrup
.25 oz Green Chartreuse

Shake all ingredients together.

Strain and pour into a rocks glass.

Garnish with slices of jalapeño.

Cocktail O’Clock: Ice Cream, Vodka and Ice

Yes, we’re ready for winter cocktail season now.

New on the menu at Tavern at the Park in Chicago: A Snowball’s Chance mixes black pepper & mint-infused vodka with melted vanilla ice cream & slapped mint, all served over ice.

Cocktail O’Clock: A Cosmo with Kick

There is probably no cocktail with a less hardcore rep than the cosmopolitan. Not sure if it became this way because of Sex and the City or just due to bloggers making fun of it, but no self-respecting cocktail snob could ever order one with a straight face. But is that fair? Really, a cosmo is supposed to be just fresh lime (good), cranberry (not so rough-and-tumble, but not a horrible flavor either), and a ton of vodka. If made right, this shouldn’t be an embarrassing drink at all.

Urbana in Washington, D.C. is now making a cocktail that tries reclaims the cosmo, with spicy fall flavors, including ginger- and allspice-based liqueurs.

Cocktail O’Clock: Sweet Charity

Champagne cocktails are dead. Long live prosecco cocktails.

The “Sweet Charity” at Tulio in Seattle mixes a glass of prosecco with a dash of Nocello (hazelnut liqueur) and a drop of cassis, and garnishes it with hazelnut brittle over the top.

Mix:
3/4 oz Nocello
3/4 oz cassis

Fill the glass with prosecco.

Poptail O’Clock: Bourbon Butterscotch Latte

If you enjoyed the bourbon butterscotch latte we brought you for last week’s cocktail o’clock, good news: we found a way to improve on it. How? How do you think? Turning it into a poptail!

We took the coffee, cream, bourbon, butterscotch and threw it all into a blender. Then we gave it a rush of cold for a few hours and created a new kind of latte.

And there you have it, another option for your coffee beyond black or with cream.
