On Trend: Popcorn

The Fancy Food Show took place in Washington earlier this month and just like any other food event, influencers gathered to sniff out the top trends. Japanese and booze-inspired fare came out as favorites, as well as cherries and DIY kits. My favorite yield, however, is popcorn.

Manufacturers dress up popcorn in cheese, truffles and as a double-trend, bourbon, to turn this homely snack into a celebrity. But as high as popcorn climbs on the social ladder, it will always remain an innocent treat found on stove tops and in between movie seat cushions.

Happy Hour Kettle Corn, popping at the Cleveland State University Market, makes sure the good ole fashion snack continues to find happy mouths. Here’s a quick video of the making of kettle corn: 8 pounds of corn popped and seasoned in less than 3 minutes.

Rock that Lobster, On E-Stationery, That Is

Don’t get me wrong. I totally hated those people that would entrench weird backgrounds into their Outlook emails and with every subsequent exchange the weird faux notebook or fluttering butterfly would never go away.

Well, for those that secretly like electronic stationery (and that might secretly include me) I’ve got some pretty cutesy food themed samples. While I don’t suggest everyday embedding, I do think that if you’re sending a recipe via email this could be a fun way to jazz it up. Plus, it could up the ante on those chain letters.

The stationery can be customized with monograms, images and up to three lines of text at $4.99 per theme.

A few favorites from MeebleMailRock Lobster (above), Cupcakes (50% of the purchase price to National Foundation for Celiac Awareness), Kitchen, and Strawberry. (And this LBD.)

The Goldilocks of the Farm

Many weeks ago I asked Bryan from Truck Patch Farms why he brought so few eggs to the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market. He told me it was too hot and the girls refused to lay eggs.

Then two weeks ago it was too hot again – they barely produced anything. But this past week, it was just right. It’s like these birds exorcised the essence from Goldilocks. They shot out enormous freaking eggs. Eggs so large the carton needed two rubber bands to keep close. Eggs so large that they’re double the size of any extra-large sized eggs found at the supermarket.

Bagels in the Land of Danes

In the tiny country of Denmark, best known for its abundance of slim dark bread, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw signs for bagels. During my four days in Copenhagen I ate plenty of browned rye bread—on its on, with butter, with garlic aioli, with smoked herring, with strong, old cheese—so please don’t judge me for wanting to see how the Danes produce this New Jersey staple.

We ordered The Bagel Co‘s version of an everything bagel, studded with pumpkin, sunflower, caraway and sesame seeds. While the crust was softer than I’d like, the crunch of the large seeds helped add that bit of texture that I crave with a bagel. But what I absolutely adored was the schmear: pesto cream cheese, lightly herbed and plenty creamy.

Getting the Most Out of Your Boyfriend, Roommate, Sister, Dad, etc

You know when you find something that your boyfriend, roommate, sister, dad, etc…can do really well—and it totally shocks you—and then you make that boyfriend, roommate, sister, dad, etc…keep doing it? Well, I discovered Bennett can poach the hell out of eggs.

The discovery occurred over Father’s Day. We finished our annual Gary Poppa 5K and the family looked to me to create a festive lunch. I dreamed up a take on eggs Benedict with a mini savory waffle standing in for an English muffin. It was then topped with caramelized onion, a poached egg and a creamy roasted red pepper and basil sauce all with a side of crispy potatoes. I delegated the tasks: my dad took on the waffles (I know, it’s Father’s Day but my dad adores cooking so it’d be unfair to make him just watch), my sister helped me with the sauce, my brother mixed up cocktails and I turned to Bennett for the poaching.

It was his first time poaching so he read a few articles, stressed out, and then poached 8 eggs. And only 2 (the first tw0) were overcooked. The eggs we used that day were a bit older and through his research we learned that poaching with fresh eggs makes the whites stay together more. We vowed to poach the next batch of eggs bought from the farmers market.

This brings me to my next spin on eggs Benny.
