A Bazaar Duel

Editor’s Note: When I (this is gansie) was 12 my jazz dance recital class performed to Paula Abdul’s Opposites Attract. At the time I thought it was the silliest thing I ever heard: how could two people that didn’t agree on a majority of issues actually like each other. Turns out almost every couple I know are comprised of fairly dissimilar people. Same is true for Britannia and his love-thang. Brit will experiment with rare ingredients; his boy doesn’t even like bananas. Here’s their he vs. he take on one of the most innovative and popular restaurants in the country.

On my not-so-recent trip to LA I decided to pay a visit to a not-so-new-restaurant, The Bazaar by José Andrés at the SLS Beverly Hills. The Bazaar’s food concept is similar to that of minibar in DC: adventurous meals in one bite. I was too impatient to wait for a reservation at minibar so I figured jumping on a plane was the easiest thing to do, natch.

The LA Times 4-star-rated Bazaar is an Alice in Wonderland of sorts, the décor is ostentatious and the furniture is playful. Exactly what is needed when one eats food from Andrés. Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by Bar Centro, a place where the drinks are as simple as a Dry Martini or unusual as a Nitro Raspberry Daiquiri, which was worth every penny (how many pennies are in $20?)

For dinner there’s a choice of dining in one of two rooms, Rojo or Blanco, one room steeped in traditional Spanish flair or one of white drapes, white chairs and white tables. I have poor taste so I opted for the latter.

There were four of us dining, two friends from LA and my better half (Deej). If you are a regular reader to ES you will know that my other half is not so easy to please when it comes to his palette. Despite this we tried the Seven Wave tasting menu.

Here is my take and my bf’s barely clothed hatred take on our experience. And whatever Mr. Picky has to say, do know that the meal was a lot more expansive than we had anticipated and certainly worth the money.

Meeting Tom Colicchio

dsc00749

A few weeks back I was on vacation in Santa Monica and coincidentally so was Tom Colicchio. Well, he wasn’t on vaca but he was there to publicize his new book, ‘wichcraft. I got off the plane (Virgin America, which I think deserves its own discussion regarding their food) and immediately made my way to the Williams-Sonoma. And I was very excited.

Unfortunately this wasn’t a Q&A nor was he taking photos. The rather overly guarded store security only permitted for photos to be taken of him while signing. Boo!

But I have to say, this guy is a legend. He was very nice and answered my questions and he even asked me some. But he was most certainly intimidating, even sitting down.

‘Wichcraft is a collection of Tom’s and co-author Sizar Ortuza‘s favorite recipes from the restaurant of the same name, located in L.A., NYC and San Francisco. When I got back from my trip I decided to throw a couple of the sandwiches together for a boys brunch. They were indeed a hit, not that there was any doubt. Read about them after the jump…

Banoffolicious

I’m not really much of a dessert person. By the time I have finished a meal I rarely have room for something sweet. I don’t bake, partly because I don’t like measuring out ingredients to precise quantities and I don’t have the patience. But at times, I do like to try my hand at something a little less taxing at the same time as producing something pretty tasty — I’m lazy like that.

A couple of months ago I was wasting away my work day by browsing my friends’ status messages on Facebook and I came across one of my friends who I went to school with in England, it read “KT is baking her famous £20 banoffee pie!”

OMG.

I was taken back to my favourite childhood dessert, banoffee pie. So amazing. So easy. But it can test your skill of making pastry, making caramel and keeping fruit from going a gooey brown colour.

Now, I know what you’re asking, what the hell is a banoffee pie?

Deceptive Dessert

chocavocadopie.JPG

I posted last month that my SO (significant other) is not a fan of fruits and vegetables, and has a clear distaste for them, actually.

Since posting the news to the world, he has admitted a caveat in his hatred: if he doesn’t see or taste said fruit or vegetable, then he’s good to go. Not an easy task you say, well you’re right. With this project at hand I did promise to cook for him and tell you all about it.

I’ve failed. Miserably.

I did make him an herbed chicken and linguine which really wasn’t blog worthy, but the dessert, now that was!

I’m a huge fan of avocados. They’re delicious and they have the good fat—what more does a gay man want?!?!  Avocados are the source for guacamole, which in my book, is absolutely amazing anytime of day. Breadline, here in DC, does a great chicken and guac sandwich, which I consume at least once a week.

A couple of years back a friend of mine made a no-bake avocado and chocolate pie. Forgetting the recipe, I set to task in recreating this. My hope was that the chocolate would overpower the flavour of the avocado.

SO’s reaction:

What have you done to this, what’s in it, you don’t normally cook for me without a reason…

I took those words as success. I waited until he ate the whole slice of pie before telling him what was in it.

And he still hates fruits and vegetables.

Recipe after the jump.

That’s Not Going Down My Throat

There is something that I need to let ya’ll know: I’ve started dating. If you are my Facebook friend then you will know that I am “In a Relationship.” I know I know, this is big news and I should have told you all sooner and I’m sorry for that. There is a reason why I have kept this a secret, I’m not proud of this but I really do have a good reason for my secrecy. You see, my other half is a picky eater, and that’s actually putting it mildly. He’s so much of a picky eater that I have yet to cook for him as I don’t know what to cook. I love food, I love to cook and I love food blogging and I have yet to cook for my boyfriend.

This is where you dear ES readers come in. I am asking, no, pleading, you to assist me in coming up with a date night menu. I really want to cook for my other half but I am at a loss. I would like to say it’s just your typical list of foods he doesn’t like, you know, things like olives, marmite or tripe—but this is not the case. You can find the list of foods he “detests” after the jump.

Politically Minded Bourbon

 dscn13431.JPG

In preparation for last weekend’s protest against California’s Proposition 8 here in DC, my friend BT came up with an ingenious idea. To make hot toddys and take them down to the Mall! The weather was awful so I think it was permitted. But just so we didn’t anger any cops we covertly drank from Starbucks cups. It’s amazing what a smile and a polite please can do to get some of these cups from the local coffee house. I’m not sure where the idea of hot toddys come from but my friends believe it is of British origin, which would explain my parents giving it to me as a kid when I would have a cold or flu. A sip of this will surely knock any young whipper snapper out*

Hot Toddy recipe after the jump.

I Want a Date

dates.jpg

A few weeks back I happened to be looking through September’s issue of Food and Wine Magazine, as I was searching for inspiration for a fall themed dinner. I came across this great recipe for chorizo-filled dates wrapped in bacon — I had to try it.

I’ve wanted to make this recipe for some time now but have not really had a reason to (like one needs a reason to wrap anything in bacon.) However, a friend of mine invited me to a presidential debate party last Friday and all the guests were required to a bring a bottle or food. I was at a loss on what I could make until I saw this; it was great. Prunes and dates are both drupes (thanks wiki) so I figured it was a perfect tribute, McCain was going to get eaten alive by Obama so it seemed fitting that I make these.

I didn’t follow the recipe exactly as indicated in F&W because this was a gay debate party and all dishes had to be free of fats.
