Attack of the Meme: Betty White-Bill Murray Mashup Eats Hot Dog

I saw Betty White on TV the other day and I had a terrible thought. I’m really sick of her. Sure it was darling when the fans decided to lift her out of now where and force Lorne Michaels into letting her host Saturday Night Live, but now, well, I’m just kind of done with this sassy, old woman fascination. (Although this is funny.)

That is, until, Bill Murray‘s face smashed on her head. Above, the Bill-Betty mashup eats an over-sized hot dog. Enjoy more weird renditions of this totally bizarre meme over at the Bill vs. Betty tumblr.

Cocktail O’Clock: National Rum Day

August 16th is Nacional Dia Del Ron, which roughly translates to: “no better time than the middle of August to take off work early and celebrate a made-up drinking holiday.” Works for us! Start your National Rum Day with this Panamanian rum cocktail.

The Panamanian Soother:
(Makes 8-10 drinks)

1 1/2 cups Ron Abuelo Añejo
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1 oz agave nectar
1 pack blueberries
12 sage leaves
2 bottles ginger beer (Barritts’s or Regatta)

Directions: In large pitcher, muddle the berries and thyme together. Then add remaining ingredients with ice and stir very well.

Petunia: A How-To Guide on Roasting a Pig

Despite this miserably hot and muggy summer, we’ll be dammed if 100-plus degree heat is going to stop us from cooking out. But what does a food obsessed person do when you want to up the game from your casual cook out?  Roast a pig for 150 people on a Saturday that turned out to be the sweatiest day of the year, that’s what.

I’ve never roasted a pig before. I’ve been to one and assisted in babysitting one, so I figured it was about time I cooked one. But not alone — my friend Tyler was eager to jump in and get dirty, and with a garden to boot I had myself a co-host. The BF helped too, something to do with music and dealing with me stress over an 80-lb pig for weeks. We all played our part.

I’ll admit, the logistics of hosting a pig roast made me thankful I wont be doing it again for another year.  There was so much I didn’t account for or didn’t think of, and didn’t realize most of it until too late.

So here’s my gift to you: a 16-step how-to on hosting your own pig roast.

Emoticon Your Food Life

Ever since my mom bought me acrylic paints for my birthday, I’ve been feeling extra creative. I now paint birthday—or any other occasion—cards for my friends and family. With a few of my neighbors, we’ve decided to start making bracelets, tapping our talents and supplies: using Liza’s fabric, Alice’s sewing machine and my paints.

I love how art takes me away from the computer screen. But as I spend a so much time on this darn laptop, I’ve tried to find ways to make my typing life just a little bit more pretty.

A few weeks ago I shared a few food-themed email templates. And today, I will share my new food and drink related gmail finds: crazy little emoticons!

So I know this is nerdy or dorky or very 1992. But you know what. It’s August. Who really wants to be in front of a computer? Might as well make it a fun, food-filled time.

Plus, there is a self-peeling banana!

It would be a shame to fly 14 hours across an ocean and not enjoy dessert.

Eating A Roll With a Hole and Other Bagel Intelligence

I never really thought about living in another country before. Sure, my summer in Barcelona many years ago was predictably magical. But could I really live there?

No, because it’s a country without bagels. And if I were to base my residency on bagel possibilities, I would strongly consider Canada (and Denmark).

Montreal bagels own some serious street cred (although our writer hated Montreal bagels), with even an appearance on Anthony Bourdain‘s anti-trend travel show No Reservations. But no obsession can really be complete without a dedicated Tumblr. And we’ve found it on Bagel Diaries.

You will find all of your Montreal bagel needs here (and links to ground-breaking bagel articles).
