Cocktail O’Clock: The Ultimate Latte

See that cuppa in the picture? Ordinary, right? Wrong.

That’s a kicked-up latte with, hello . . . bourbon and butterscotch. Yes, if you’ve been paying attention, that’s the same post-dinner beverage offered at JG Domestic in Philly. This drink kinda brought it home for me, especially since it’s not often — okay, never have I shared a latte with 8 people. Yes, we all could have ordered our own but after a full dinner of plate after plate of food; sips were good for the time being. The operative phrase there is “time being.” So like any good recipe-jacking food-a-phile, I made a few notes to replicate the latte at home. The challenge was: could I make it as good without a fancy machine?

Guess what? It’s damn good and pretty damn close to what you will find at Jose Garces’ restaurant. The foam, which I thought would be most challenging, was not at all. So here you have it. I even included step-by-step pictures, so really you have no reason not to try this.

Cocktail O’Clock: Welcoming the Season

With the weather turning ever slightly colder, it’s time to start thinking about hot drinks. And by hot drinks, of course we mean spiked coffee.

Café Pacifico

1 1/2 oz Partida Blanco tequila
½ oz Coffee liqueur
4 oz Freshly brewed, hot coffee
3 Bar spoons of cinnamon and sugar mixture (4 parts granulated white sugar to 1 part ground cinnamon, mixed together)
Heavy cream

Add tequila and coffee to a warm glass. Mix in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Float heavy cream on top of the coffee. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon-sugar on top and a cinnamon stick.

Cocktail O’Clock: The Softer Side of Bourbon

Harry Denton’s Starlight Room, a classic San Francisco cocktail lounge long known for having one of the best views in town, reopened this month with a new look and — most interesting to us — new cocktails.

Ever had a date who said she (or he!) can’t handle bourbon? Here’s your new entry-level bourbon drink. Who couldn’t handle this one?

Savoy Bounce

1 oz Bulleit Bourbon
1 oz St Germain
1 oz Lemon
Prosecco
3 muddled Brandied Cherries

Muddle cherries with bourbon, St. Germain and lemon juice.  Shake all together, strain into champagne flute and top with prosecco.  Garnish with a lemon peel.

Gridiron Grub: Gearing up

This has been an odd year to be a football fan. With college football ending last January and the NFL lockout lasting through the summer, sports fans have heard incessant talk about the sport but seen very little of it until the last few weeks of preseason games. Because of this, I was ecstatic that I was able to spend last Saturday at the home opener for the Penn State Nittany Lions. I am from Northeast Pa. and Saturday pilgrimages to Beaver Stadium are practically a birthright. The early morning wake-up; the drive through pristine mountains and countryside until the stadium appears on the horizon; thousands of tailgaters sharing food, drinks and stories…..there is nothing quite like it.

Tailgating was in full swing at 9am, the university band was blaring, crowds were cheering and even the first kick-off was returned for a touchdown. There was really only one thing missing at last week’s game: fall weather. At kickoff the temperature was peaking at 90 degrees and felt even hotter with 100,000 of my closest friends packed around. Besides an opening day win, the only thing that made the heat easier to bear was the vendors climbing up and down the stadium stairs with water and fresh-squeezed lemonade for sale. Which got me thinking.

Cocktail O’Clock: A Heated Affair

Now that apple season is officially here (and apple recipes are officially everywhere) it’s just about time for a nice hot cider.  And what hot drink couldn’t be made better with a little tequila?

Jacques Bezuidenhout, brand ambassador for Tequila Partida, sent over this recipe for making your own apple cider, plus a cocktail creation that kicks that cider up quite a few notches.

Heated Affair

2 oz Partida Anejo Tequila
6 oz Hot Spiced Apple Cider
Heavy Cream

Apple Cider Preparation:
In a pot add organic apple juice. Add winter spices like cloves, cinnamon stick, all spice, and orange peel. Start of by adding a few cloves, one cinnamon stick, etc…so as to find the right-spiced apple cider flavor. You can always add more spice later. Bring everything to a low heat for about 15 mins. Taste for flavor. When the desired flavor is reached then take off stove. Strain out all the spices and orange peel.

In a small warm wine glass add Tequila and hot apple cider. Float heavy cream.

Garnish: Grate fresh Nutmeg over cream.
