Gansie Fever is Spreading

TVFF has been hit. Bon Appetit has been hit. And yes, BS has been hit (sorry, mom). 2009 is officially the year of egg yolk on everything. This breakfast-for-dinner dish was inspired by the “best breakfast ever” shot in our girl El’s Morrocan food porn photos. Admittedly, my hastily-invented creation looks a little less profess than that one, but it is runny, eggy, deliciousness neveretheless. Here’s what I did:

Less Might Just Be Less

lessismore.jpg

After a weekend of excess, I thought I’d finally check out a website my friend Anna sent me a bit ago. Here’s her initial email:

to: gansie, 80P
from: anna
subject: $$

So I was thrilled that our CC bill this month was 1/2 to a 1/3 less than previous months.  Yah us!!  Looking through the items they were mostly a lot of Harris Teeters, an El Rodeo, Parker & Otis, and you get the point.  Them I’m at my desk today eating leftover pasta salad topped with chopped pork from Sunday when I hear this lady on WUNC talking about eating for $1 a day.

Now although that sounds tremendously impressive she also said her “normal” cost of eating is $80/month shopping at Whole Foods. I really need to read into her blog to see how she did that.  I really have no interest in eating $1 worth of food per day.  I also kind of want to see what she looks like.

So I checked out her site, Less Is Enough. I enjoyed her usage of Jiffy products, but I probably didn’t need to see photographic evidence of her receipts. Her restraint is pretty remarkable. She eats almost nothing. She keeps very little food at her house and shops basically daily to have just enough to eat for that day. It’s a vastly different relationship with food. I know I’d be miserable. I love my pantry. I love buying food. I love making food with eighteen different ingredients. So don’t worry kids, it’s nothing you’ll be seeing on ES. (I do love that fried egg in twice-baked potato, though.)

NORA! Organic, Local, Seasonal, Sustainable, Austrian

media776.jpg

For all you organic, local food, seasonal food, farmers market lovers, you need to know the name Nora Poullion. She not only initiated the farmers markets in DC, but she also started the very first certified organic restaurant in the nation, Restaurant Nora.

January marked the 30th anniversary of her restaurant, so obviously she is waaaay ahead of her time. She’s essentially the lesser known Alice Waters. She came to America from Austria when she was 21, and discovered how horrible the agricultural practices were over here. All of the agribusiness, pesticides, hormones, etc. absolutely shocked her (rightfully so).

So when she started her restaurant she knew she wanted it to serve organic food. But it was the 70s, before organic was a known word or even a positive word, she went out in her car searching for organic farms. And although it was extremely difficult, she made it happen! She started the chef-farmer connection and farm to table idea at a time when no one had even considered doing such a thing. She’s a bad-ass in my eyes.

Having worked on a documentary about her for the last few months, I have become a firm believer in what she stands for – the production of food is connected to EVERYTHING: our health, our environment, our well-being. I have also enjoyed learning Nora’s quirks, and think I have her accent down pretty well.

Anyway, the documentary, NORA!, is premiering this Sunday at the Environmental Film Festival. If you’re in DC come check it out at the Carnegie Institute (16th and P) at 6:30pm.

So if Oscar Mayer is advertising to bloggers, does this mean it’s the end of blogging?

Two of My Favorite Things: Women and Winemakers (A Trend I Can Get Behind)

When you stumble upon an article that combines two of the things you respect more than life, you have to share.  Read this recent piece on Women winemakers and check out the slideshow:

The New Niche: Decaf Drinkers

dd_ad.jpg

Starbucks is taking some serious hits from its competitors for the recent decision to stop having decaf at-the-ready in the afternoon. Customers wanting their coffee fix sans caffeine will have to wait a few minutes for their drink to brew.

And the national chains are taking full advantage of the ‘Bucks weak spot.

Last month ES noted Caribou Coffee’s gimmick to lure in the decaf crew (free always works!) and now the DD is on it too. Dunkin Donuts is taking a crack at Starbucks with this new ad, see left.

But what I love most about this ad is the mention of 24 hour breakfast food availability. Dunkin Donuts isn’t the ES endorsed coffee chain for their cup-o-joe alone.
