– Wow. I have to say I’m a little shocked that so few of you want me to make my own sous vide machine, but the ES community came down firmly on the anti-botulism side of things, with 67 percent of you voting against any sous vide tomfoolery.

– I think we can all agree we’re anti-Padma Lakshmi shilling for Hardee’s. KMango: Ew. Padma, please pack your knives and go anywhere but Hardee’s!

-No Obama sightings yet, but ESers did have some close calls. Maids: friend of mine saw Michelle Obama heading into the Dupont North Cosi. Liza: I saw Jill Biden at Nora’s Restaurant… does that count for anything?

– Lastly, I’ve been trying really hard to follow up 80p and TVFF’s beer puns but I’m drawing a blank. Come on people, we can’t abandon a good pun war after the second go!

No Obama Food Sightings This Weekend…

obama.jpg

Damn! With President Obama sticking around town this weekend and his repub oppo busy worshiping at the altar of Limbaugh,we thought the Prez might have some free time to visit another DC restaurant. But the Eater-in-Chief opted to spend his Friday night out at the Wizards game instead.

Which is in a way good news because that means Round One of the Obama Eating Contest is still on — so don’t forget to cast your votes. The guesses so far:

Top Chef Exit Interview: Second Runner-Up (And Contest Results!)

padma.jpg

OK, first things first–the results of our Top Chef Finale Guessing Game. After consulting all of the winning chef’s recipes online, it seems they used the following ingredients: Foie gras, redfish, corn, scallops, venison, wild mushrooms, cilantro, tuna, hamachi, black bass, fennel oil, fried tempura bits, chestnut, celeraic, blackberries, green beans, kumquat, orange juice, lemon juice, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce, cucumber juice, ginger juice, jalapeno juice, sriracha, fennel, avocado, cucumber, orange, blood orange, grapefruit, chile oil, garlic, rosemary, Yukon gold potatoes, butter, heavy cream, sugar, veal demi glace, French bread, eggs, milk, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, apples, cider vinegar, star anise, pecans, cayenne, half and half, Tabasco, tomato paste, yellow onion, bell pepper, creole spice.

Phew! It takes a lot to be a Top Chef! I can’t believe no one was able to guess all five with a list like that! A lot of people had one correct. No one had three. Only a few people had two. First off there’s BS(!) with scallops and sriracha. Chris had foie gras and scallops. He came so close to winning it outright but guessed smoked paprika instead of cayenne.  The lovely BS’s Mom had mushrooms and celeraic (nice guess on cleraic! Also used by Stefan.) Ben! had scallops and garlic (hmmm…garlic is close to not counting, but Padma and the judges rule it’s OK.) Queen had cinnamon and eggs. JoeHoya had mushrooms and lemon (well, he used lemon juice, but I’m assuming that came from a lemon, so you get the point). Muffin had cream and foie gras (sorry, we’ll give you points for cream, but not butter–that falls in the too obvious category as stated in the rules).

So of the ppl with two guesses correct, only two had the winner right: BS’s Mom and Ben! Congrats to both of our winners! BS’s Mom, as you may have guessed, is my mom, so conflict-of-interest rules prevent her from receiving ES prizes. Ben! send us your mailing address — the Top Chef cookbook and calendar are on the way.

OK, now on to the good stuff…our interview with the third place chef’testant…

Top Chef Finale Guessing Game — Win Top Chef Prizes!

What a long, crazy season it’s been. Top Chef 5 finally comes to a conclusion Wednesday night when Carla, Stefan and Hosea will compete for the title in New Orleans. Of course there will be surprise twists (shocker!), while both Gail Simmons and Toby Young will be back to judge.

To celebrate, ES is giving you a chance to guess the outcome of the finale — and one lucky winner will receive a copy of Top Chef: The Cookbook (signed by a mystery chef’testant) and a 2009 Top Chef calendar!

Here’s the contest: Leave in the comments your guesses for what ingredients the champion Top Chef will use in the final episode. You get five guesses, and whoever picks the most correct items wins. Tiebreaker goes to the person who correctly predicts the winner. For example, here are my guesses:

1. Bacon
2. Scallops
3. Sriracha
4. Cranberries
5. Andouille Sausage
Winner: Carla

Rules: All guesses must be left in the comments of this post by 9:59pm this Wednesday evening, and you only get the point if the winner tomorrow uses your ingredient at any moment in the episode. Don’t be a smartass — you can’t guess “salt,” or “olive oil” or anything dumb like that, nor can you be overly broad and guess “fruit” or “pork.” All disputes will be settled by Padma Lakshmi and/or yours truly.

Remember, the winner will get a Top Chef cookbook and official calendar so think hard! Leave your guesses below, then join us Wednesday night as we live blog the Top Chef finale and crown our own winner.

Don’t remember what they use all the time on Top Chef? Check out our exit interviews from this season:

Contest: Where Will Obama Eat Next?

obama.jpg

Forgive me for being a bad citizen, but as far as 2009 politics go, I’m totally bored by all this talk about back taxes and stimuli. Honestly, I could go for another campaign. Where’d that mooseburger lady go anyway? She at least made things interesting. Eric Cantor is like, the most boring nemesis ever.

But there is one DC hot topic that all ESers are of course enthused about — where Mr. O is eating. Dubya didn’t visit a single Washington restaurant during the entire last year of his presidency, but Obama is already making the scene around town and drawing shrieking, Beatles-esque crowds wherever he goes.

During Inauguration week, Britannia spied him at Ben’s Chili Bowl — the first obligatory stop for any DC pol. But Michelle questioned Barack’s DC fast food expertise by taking her own trip to rapidly-growing burger chain Five Guys.

Spies say Obama has also been seen at romantic White House-area restaurant Equinox and solid-if-boring standby Bobby Van’s Steakhouse.

So we’re inaugurating an ES challenge: Who can guess which DC eatery Obama will visit next? The first round odds:

Pittsburgh Wins!

pittsburgh.jpg

Yes, yes, we’re aware there was some kind of footie game this week, but in more important news, the city of Pittsburgh was crowned champion in the Endless Simmer Super Bowl Food-Off!

With nearly 1,800 of you weighing in (biggest ES poll ever!), Arizona didn’t even stand a chance. Iron City takes home the crown with an impressive 69 percent of the vote.

[Poll id=”31″]

In fact, ES has become so enamored with the ‘burgh’s one of a kind heart attack-inducing culinary talents that we’ve decided to go ahead and award them the ultimate food world prize. Yes, Pittsburgh is the first city ever inducted into the Endless Eaters Hall of Fame, where the entire town will live on in edible infamy alongside such eating luminaries as Anthony Bourdain and JoeHoya.

Congratulations on a magnificent win, Pittsburgh. Can I get fries with that?

Hezbollah Tofu is Your Eater of the Year

startomatocover.jpg

Ah, another year gone, another Endless Simmer Eater of the Year crowned.

It’s only fitting that after Anthony Bourdain was crowned EotY in our inaugural 2007 poll, Bourdain’s veganizing nemesis Hezbollah Tofu took home the award in our second annual contest.

Winning an impressive 48 percent of your votes, HT held off all challenges from Julia Child, John Mayer, Michael Pollan, Kendra Wilkinson and Cindy McCain.

HT may be taking a break from the full-time recipe writing, but their spirit will live on with one of the most coveted honors in the eating community — a permanent spot in the Endless Eater Hall of Fame.
