Cocktail O’Clock: Never Wake a Sleeping Dragon

It’s Friday. It’s been a long week. It’s ten billion degrees out.

Yep, it’s damn well time for Cocktail O’Clock. A nice, strong, spicy Cocktail O’Clock. Here’s a guest recipe from mixologist Hal Wolin of A Muddled Thought.

Never Wake a Sleeping Dragon

2 oz Ron Abuelo 12-year-old rum
1/2 oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
1/2 oz Scotch (preferably 10 year old)
2 dashes Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub
2 Dashes Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir gently and strain into coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with half a habanero pepper.

Cocktail O’Clock: What’s Up Doc?

I’m officially obsessed with ginger beer. You used to only see it utilized in a good old Moscow mule, but I increasingly find it turning up in all kinds of cocktails, from rum-based drinks to poptails. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all good.

Here’s one of the most creative uses of ginger beer I’ve seen yet — combined with carrots and cognac for one killer cocktails from Kevin Diedrich of Jasper’s Corner Tap & Kitchen in San Francisco.

Cocktail O’Clock: The Manmosa

For an unknown reason, I find day drinking more socially acceptable when it’s warm and sunny outside. Given the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having for the past few months, my spring (and end of winter) have seen their fair share of drunk brunches. Even though mimosas and bellinis are synonymous with single 20s girl brunches (or at least that’s what twitter tells me), my weapon of choice is normally beer or bloody marys.

But on one particularly Saturday, after a morning of volunteering and sweating, my favorite brunch bartender suggested he make me a “manmosa.” His story is this: one day a bunch of big guys came in and ordered mimosas….but he figured he could do better, and make something a little better suited to these men. Apparently the real “manmosa” is supposed to be vodka, beer, and orange juice. Even though I love to drink, that is *not* something I can drink before 1pm without some serious consequences, or my “friends” calling me an alcoholic.

The “manmosa” I was served was better (and not modified for me! This is his recipe):

Cocktail O’Clock: Just Beet It

ES called beets in cocktails the next big thing way back in 2010, and sure ‘nough we are seeing them show up on drink lists coast to coast.

Just Beet it

1/2 oz. Grey Goose vodka
1/4 oz. lemon juice
1/4 oz. beet juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass with a beet salt garnish.

Peanut Butter and Jell-WHY?!? Vodka

By this point in my Endless Simmer career (and let’s face it, my career as a human being in general), I have become the go-to girl when it comes to crazy/ridiculous/ill-fated novelty alcoholic endeavors. (Well, to be fair, this honor is shared with my booze soulmate, ML.)

So it should come as no shock that when Van Gogh wanted to send us a bottle of its new PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY FLAVORED VODKA to sample, I was the first (and only) writer to jump at the chance to experience such a creation. I didn’t have the highest of hopes for it, but come on, I never really have dreams of glory for any of my drunken experiences. All I hope for are entertaining stories we can retell in the future. And by “entertaining” I mean “humiliating,” but whatever.

My roommates and I decided to throw together a last-minute “flavored vodka tasting party” (classy) to poll people on the PB&J vodka. As one might imagine, the reactions were not the most positive. Don’t get me wrong, I love vodka. I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But something seems a bit…. off about this booze.

Their website describes it as such:

Cocktail O’Clock: Salsa Verde

Find yourself with leftover tequila from Cinco de Mayo? Here’s a way to use it up that won’t make you gag on a moldy lime.

Firefly in Washington, D.C. infuses tequila with poblano peppers (how-to here), then mixes it up with cilantro and lime for a garden-fresh cocktail that makes drinking on Monday sound downright healthy.

Salsa Verde

1.5 oz. Partida Blanco tequila infused with roasted poblano peppers (how-to here)
1 oz. Cointreau
2 oz. fresh lime juice
2 oz. cilantro-agave puree (agave syrup blended with a few springs of cliantro)

Shake together and strain over ice into a Collins glass with a peppered salt rim.
