Pop Quiz: Would You Eat Breast Cheese?

breast cheese

Sorry about our recent transition to all-baby, all-the-time, but this story is too good to pass up. The NY Post reports:

Chef Daniel Angerer is letting diners at Klee Brasserie munch on cheese made from his wife’s breast milk.

“It tastes like cow’s-milk cheese, kind of sweet,” he told The Post. The flavor depends on what the cheese is served with — Angerer recommends a Riesling — and “what the mother eats,” said Angerer, who once bested Bobby Flay on TV’s “Iron Chef.”

After blogging about his efforts with the human cheese, customers started demanding a sample, he said. “The phone was ringing off the hook,” the chef said. “So I prepared a little canapé of breast-milk cheese with figs and Hungarian pepper.”

The response has been generally positive from those who’ve tried the cheese, although many customers are too squeamish to attempt it.

Well this is definitely not cheating. But is it an amazing idea or is this chef just amazingly disturbed? Cast your vote and feed us back in the comments.

I’m not grossed out by the idea, but one big question remains unanswered: how did the chef get enough milk to make cheese?

I nursed my son for 18 months, and pumped every once in a while, and OMG pumping is NOT EASY. I know very few women who were able to pump a lot of milk, and “a lot” means more than 6 oz. per pumping session. I considered the stuff to be liquid gold… no way was I going to waste it on grown-ups!

Unless his wife has a freakish oversupply, I just don’t get it.

Ok, I would eat human breast milk cheese, but breasts are not one of my favorite things (I don’t even notice big ones sometimes). So how do I vote. If you eat cow milk and goat milk cheese, which I do, why not human?

is breastmilk cheese vegan? since no animals are kept against free will and all. i see a huge moneymaking idea.

@Dan I don’t think vegans are such because of animal treatment…and I think any vegan I know would vomit at the thought of drinking or eating something made with human breast milk. Maybe not, but I bet so.

I agree with westcoast…breasts aren’t one of my favorite things (I mean, I have them…that’s it) but if we eat milk and cheese from a freaking COW, why not from a human (who probably eats a better diet and lives a healthier lifestyle)?

I’d choose breast milk cheese over a lot of other things. Like guinea pig or a hot pocket.

But hold on. What is the kid eating now that the milk is being used for cheese?

The vegans I was friends with were for political reasons and said they would actually eat breast milk. Maybe I was friends with weird vegans. But aren’t they all 😉

Oops, my comment was supposed to say I don’t think *all* vegans are such because of animal treatment…I need to start proofreading my comments before hitting submit.
