Deleted Scenes

deleted-scenes-dvd.jpg

It’s pretty cool that my part time job’s research solely revolves around eating and talking to chefs. Unfortunately, the blurbs I write for Express are super short and some of my favorite sentences are cut out. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately, with some behind-the-scenes knowledge. The sentences below are from my actual submissions, so they may not make sense with out clicking on the links first. It’d be like watching the “deleted scenes” before watching the movie.

A Taste of the High Life: The Monocle [Express]

And on your way out from the bathroom, try not to laugh as you check out 20 year old photos of (a thinner) Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) and (a strikingly similar haired) Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss).

Sandwich On, Wii Off: Breadsoda Innovations [Express]

The secret on the goat cheese: Imported from a Vermont farm, the goat cheese is mixed in-house with thyme, lemon and pepper to create a creamy base for this filling sandwich.

Skye’s the Limit for Salads: Skye Lounge [Express]

Okay, so I don’t have a sweet sentence for this post. But my dining companion, Gypsy, actually did order a cocktail in a plastic cup. She’s amazing. Check out her globe trotting at The Gypsy Diaries.

Feed Us Back: Comments of the Week

The Endless Simmer world was introduced to the Capital Cooking world this week, leading to comments such as those from Yvo:

So… is she naked under an apron, or is that a dress meant to look like an apron?

…and Brian to profess his undying love:

i think i love her. i don’t care what you think of me.

BS and photog Brian teamed up to bring us another celebrity shot that didn’t include a face. At least this time it wasn’t just their feet. Attempting to guess the secret celebrity’s identity, Brenna said:

It’s Sway, the mtv reporter, i’m 100% positive!

That was my guess, too, especially since he’s from Oakland. But according to Brian that is incorrect. So keep those guesses coming in.

The Answer Key

When I tell my ES readers that all will be revealed Monday, I generally mean it, just not this time. So I got a little lazy, sue me. It’s the summer anyways.

Ok, I admit this wasn’t the most revealing mystery food ever. The picture was taken close enough so as to resemble either cat food or wet peanut brittle. The reality? When 80p is cooking, think fish. In this case, salmon.

SNDC: Veggie Shrimp Edition

dsc03459.JPG

My SNDC (Sunday Night Dinner Club) convened this past weekend at the home of our only member who owns a tool-kit, we’ve not been getting together as often as we usually do due to summer travels but this weekend was a must, our good friend T2 turned twenty-errr, anyway. T2 is one of those veggie types, and when we cook SNDC the veggie dishes are usually cooked by the birthday boy but as it was his birthday we couldn’t really ask him to cook, could we? I decided to theme the dinner on tomatoes, I wrote a few weeks back about the tomato scare that the country has been under so I thought I would laugh in the face of danger and host a tomato themed dinner, I had it planned for over a week and then on Friday the FDA cleared tomatoes of salmonella, damn you government types for thwarting my danger plan.

I have to admit something to you all, up until this past weekend I was a virgin… a Dupont Farmers Market virgin that is! I had never been before and wow, very impressed. So on Sunday morning with coffee in hand, I was your picture perfect foodie, buying organic carbon-footprint free produce and cheeses for my dinner.

After the jump, recipes and pictures of the four tomato base dishes (keep in mind these recipes are for 12 people).

Here’s Waldo

bobby-flay-2-600-x-398.jpg

Congrats to Jeb for amazingly picking out the right person, commenter JoeHoya. Here’s a closer pic of JH, probably taunting Bobby Flay.

Jeb, you win the right to brag in this post only.

I Have Crab Cakes, too. . . in Maine

100_3682.JPG

We may be famous for our lobstah up here, but I made some damn good crab cakes with some local Maine crab meat last summer that I’ve been meaning to share with you guys. I was reminded after the post a few weeks back. This is an alteration/combination of a recipe from my mom and some Old Bay inspirations. I didn’t have any Old Bay on hand, but I knew I wanted the flavor in there, so I looked up the ingredients and tossed in most of them proportionate to how much I like each spice.

These are wicked good, better than restaurant! Enough talk, recipe after the jump.

Where’s Waldo?

bobby-flay-600-x-398.jpg

Here’s a fun game for the end of the week.

In this picture of Food Network’s recent Throwdown with Bobby Flay featuring Granville Moore’s chef, Teddy Folkman, find the longtime ES commenter, JoeHoya.  You’ll remember, JH scooped this story months before air-time.

Winner wins something.
