Dandelions and Butterfly Kisses (aka Flowers and Grass)

I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I could be considered a ‘Health Nut.’ I was thinking about tweaking my daily diet, but after reviewing my normal eating habits I believe that I am one fit MoFo. For instance, my morning vodka smoothies are always packed full of vibrant, fresh, locally grown fruit. And whenever I eat out at a restaurant I always order a side dish of steamed vegetables. This provides me with extra fiber, vitamins and minerals, and a moist place to extinguish my cigarettes. And after the work day is done, I feel that I am the Jack LaLanne of Happy Hour. No greasy hot wings or fat-laden dips for me. I stay with the simple heart-healthy olive. Two are conveniently provided in each low-calorie martini, and I’ve been told that there are times during the course of the evening that I’ll have consumed over twelve of these little Mediterranean medicine balls. (I don’t really recall this, but then I’ve never been good with numbers).

So after my ‘Health Nut’ self-realization, I decided to seek out and experience the next level of the healthy food lifestyle which I affectionately refer to as the ‘All Natural-Organic Health Fanatic.’ We all know someone in this category. It’s the person who does squats while talking on the phone, doesn’t eat ‘red’ meat and always asks the waiter if the tuna salad is ‘dolphin safe.’ I asked to be introduced to this lifestyle by my friend Robin who would rather fast for thirty days than eat anything that wasn’t organically grown. Plus, she’s got a great rack…er, a great rack of Self-Help books that I occasionally borrow. Robin happily agreed to escort me through her typical day of ‘health driven’ meals (her term, not mine).

Burns My Bacon: Swooning

Am I the only one sick of seeing the word ‘swoon’ every time a blogger or blog commenter sees anything they would consider shoving in their pie hole? Wait, wait. Let’s back up and start with the definition of swoon.

swoon (verb): FAINT, DROOP, FADE

swoon (noun): a partial or total loss of consciousness; a state of bewilderment or ecstasy

Okay, so maybe the sight of something so delicious has caused them to become bewildered. Or brought on a state of ecstasy. But I doubt it. And really, using the word ‘swoon’ brings to mind the image of an 18th-century noblewoman passing out at the mention of undergarments in public. Do you really need smelling salts to revive you after you looked at that fucking cupcake? No. You don’t. Or maybe you have vertigo. Hell, why don’t you head over to WebMD and check out the medical conditions that may be causing you to swoon. I’m pretty sure ‘looking at food’ isn’t listed.

It seems that these overused words cycle and run their course in the blogging world. It wasn’t too long ago that the ‘word’ ahem ‘delish’ was used in every other sentence. Thankfully, it seems to be fading. I can only hope ‘swoon’ runs its course and disappears sooner rather than later.

New Favorite Type of Potato Chip: RIB FLAVORED

Just when you thought the world of meat-flavored junk food couldn’t get any more exhilarating… may I present to you:

Baby back rib flavored chips from Zapp’s. What?! I know. I had never even heard of Zapp’s until I moved to the south, and now they are my very favorite potato chips (even before this rib-flavored discovery!) Made in Louisiana, they’re crunchy, Cajun-made kettle chips with all sorts of great seasonings and flavors—try the Voodoo flavor if you can get your hands on them.

These ribby wonders were discovered via my roommate Eric, who Tweeted about them (complete with Instagram of the bag, of course). We were both home at the time (“the Tweets were coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE!”) so I ran downstairs to sample the wares. Of course the bag was already torn apart and a bunch of chips devoured.

“Sorry,” shrugged my roommate Lisa. “I couldn’t wait to open the bag properly, I just had to tear into it. Literally.”

Fair enough! Wondering what they taste like? Well, kind of like BBQ flavored chips, but with a little more…salty, porkiness to them, I guess. Is it just a placebo effect? Whatever. The more meat-flavored snacks the better, I say!

My Mystery Market Melon

I love melon. Like, LOVE melon. I’ve been known to eat a whole watermelon in one sitting, which is impressive yet also kinda gross.

Anyway, being such a summertime melon lover, you would THINK I knew all the types of melons available on God’s green earth! But you would be wrong. I was at the local farmer’s market around closing time on Sunday, and this great produce stall was selling melons 2 for $7. I don’t even know if that’s a good deal, but I went for it. I selected a lovely Tuscan cantaloupe, and something that looked like a funky honeydew.

“What is this?” I asked the pleasant merchant.
“Oh, it’s an interesting one. It’s called a Galia melon… it’s Israeli in origin. It tastes like a honeydew, but more grassy and tropical,” she informed me.

Whaaaa? Clearly I had to buy this sucka.

For Sandra Lee Fans Only

As you know, sometimes here at ES, we review various food-related products.  Some are good, and some are, erm, less good.  Occasionally though, something comes along that is almost too ridiculous for words.  Enter Southern Living’s the half-hour hostess.

First of all, what’s up with the title?  If something says it is going to take half-an-hour, I expect to be sipping a cold beverage no more than thirty minutes after I begin, forty-five at the outside because I tend not to read the directions correctly the first time through.  Why then, for the “Rush Hour Shower” party, must I, the day before:

Put Some Salt on It

I’m a sugar cone guy. Always have been. Wafer cones have less personality than Mitt Romney’s dog, and waffle cones…they’re just trying to hard.

Until recently, I had no idea there was a fourth option. (Only me? Did you guys know about this all along and just weren’t telling me for some reason?) Anyways—stopping at Steve’s Ice Cream on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk on one of these delightfully hot summer days we’ve been having, I was caught off guard by the question, “sugar cone or pretzel cone?”

Instinctively, I answered “sugar.” But then I reconsidered when I saw the thick, sturdy pretzel cones. Why the hell not? I went with pretzel, and hell yeah, I am glad I did. It’s not even so much that the cone is delicious—it is tasty—it’s that with each cone-centric lick of my vanilla bourbon ice cream, I got a sprinkle of salt on my tongue as well. Perfection.

Pretzels: good with beer, good with ice cream. What’s not to love?

Sorry, sugar cone. Your days are numbered.

Burns My Bacon: Scenery vs. Food

What’s the deal with beachfront restaurants? Why do waterfront views and good food seem to be mutually exclusive?

This week I decided to try out a different place than the travesty of a restaurant we visited last time we went to the shore and ventured out to Cape May, NJ. We did our research and found a place that had a nice view and good reviews. Planning accordingly, we arrived in time for the sunset on the harbor. As the reviews said, the view was awesome. We could watch the boats come in, see the sunset, and enjoyed the scenery. The restaurant is actually on the second floor of the building, so there truly isn’t a bad seat in the house.

The food was a different story.
