Smashburger Sampler Austin

Food Porn of the Day: Burgers on Burgers

Smashburger Sampler Austin

I was invited to the pre-opening tasting of the new Smashburger here in Austin. I’m not much for burgers (unless they’re really exceptional) or “fast casual” type restaurants in general, but I’d heard a fair amount about the Colorado-based chain and decided to check it out. I will say the burgers (ground beef, chicken breast, and black bean) were much higher quality than your average chain burger, but they were still greasy, decadent, meaty… burgers. They held nothing back at the tasting event; the pic above is only part of what I was given to sample. I only ate a bite or so of each, otherwise I think my stomach would have exploded.

Kitchenista Strawberry Pancakes

Extreme Food Porn Alert: Pancake Orgy

I’m serious. EXTREME FOOD PORN. I was browsing Instagram today (what, you don’t follow like thirty food photography Instas?) and one of my favorites, thekitchenista, posted a picture of her pancakes. Well, it wasn’t a picture, more like a heart-stopping revelation:

Kitchenista Strawberry Pancakes

Whaaaaat. I don’t even consider myself a “sweet breakfast foods” type of person, I’m more of a savory, but I think this photo could convince me to switch teams. Angela, Miss Kitchenista herself, describes this as “Strawberry shortcake pancakes! Crispy buttermilk pancakes, homemade maple strawberry syrup & fresh maple whipped cream.” I WANT.

Anyway, if you’re in the mood to make yourself perma-hungry, check out her blog, The Kitchenista Diaries, as well. (This is a totally unsolicited plug and we are not affiliated, I just like to spread the fellow food blogger/photog love and her stuff is great!)

Eating A Roll With a Hole and Other Bagel Intelligence

I never really thought about living in another country before. Sure, my summer in Barcelona many years ago was predictably magical. But could I really live there?

No, because it’s a country without bagels. And if I were to base my residency on bagel possibilities, I would strongly consider Canada (and Denmark).

Montreal bagels own some serious street cred (although our writer hated Montreal bagels), with even an appearance on Anthony Bourdain‘s anti-trend travel show No Reservations. But no obsession can really be complete without a dedicated Tumblr. And we’ve found it on Bagel Diaries.

You will find all of your Montreal bagel needs here (and links to ground-breaking bagel articles).

Friday Food Porn: Lost in Translation

This was my view at a recent stop to a local taqueria. If you live in an area with a large Hispanic population, you may be familiar with this image. Bimbo bakery is the largest bakery in the world, with brands in Mexico, Europe and the US. You would think someone in the marketing department would have called a meeting about the name and the fact that the mascot is a satisfied looking bear with an eclair phallus. Apparently not.
