Cocktail O’Clock: Shibuya Shake

Any drink that combines the exotic (shiso leaf), the extravagant (St. Germain) and the just plain silly (Squirt!) is an A-OK drink as far as we’re concerned.

This one comes from the just-opened Jasper’s Corner Tap and Kitchen in San Francisco. If you don’t have a Japanese grocer around the corner, we’re pretty sure it would work with a couple basil leaves instead of the shiso. Pretty sure the Squirt is essential though.

Cocktail O’Clock: Breaking The Law

August is known for vacations. For hot, lazy days. And honestly, there’s really nothing better to do than get into some trouble. It’s fine. August is meant for mistakes.

Try this criminal cocktail from The Summit Bar in New York City.

Breaking The Law

1 oz Don Amado Reposado Mezcal
1 oz Dimmi Italian Cordial
3/4 oz Chipotle Agave
3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
Seltzer
Lime Zest for Garnish

Method:
Muddle cucumber slice with orange bitters in a Collins (tall) glass. Using cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake spirits and lime juice, and strain into serving glass. Top with soda, and garnish with fresh lime zest.

Cocktail O’Clock: Tequila + Balsamic

Who says tequila is made for margaritas only? This sweet and savory summer cocktail mixes the hard stuff with fresh strawberries, basil, lime juice and — for an extra foodie touch — balsamic vinegar. We approve.

Corzo Italian Sipper

1 ¼ oz. Corzo Silver
2 strawberries
1 sprigs of fresh basil
4 drops of balsamic
1 oz. Fresh lime juice
2 oz. distilled water
2 packets of Splenda or similar or 1 oz Agave Nectar

Serve over the rocks in an 8 oz. glass

Method: In a mixing glass muddle fresh strawberries and basil, add the rest of the ingredients with ice, shake 20 times and serve in a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a fresh spring of basil.

Cocktail O’Clock: The Tranquilo

Today’s Cocktail O’Clock comes from Firefly in D.C., which somehow fits everything we like about summertime drinking — tequila, grapefruit juice, fresh mint, lime — into one cocktail. Even though we just recently hated on jars, the Tranquilo is one summer cocktail we’d take for a spin.

5 mint leaves, muddled
3 parts fresh grapefruit juice
2 parts Herradura Reposado tequila
1 part Cointreau
1 squeeze of lime juice

Shake and serve in a mason jar, garnish with a mint sprig and a slice of grapefruit.

Cocktail O’Clock: Guinness ‘n’ Gin

Solution #2 for how to drink dark beer in summer: mix it with gin!

The Black Friars Pint at The Fifth Floor in San Francisco has Plymouth Gin, Cardamom Spiced Guinness and East India Sherry, shaken with egg white and Angostura bitters.

(You may recall solution #1 was this beer float from Brooklyn’s 61 Local)

Cocktail O’Clock: Dutch Root Beer Float

Mmm…root beer float — such a perfect drink/dessert combo, except it almost feels like there’s something missing…oh right — booze!

2 oz. Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Vodka
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
6 oz. chilled root beer

Add the vodka directly to a tall glass, then top with root beer, and lastly the ice cream (add slowly, as it has a tendency to overflow).  Garnish with a long straw and enjoy!
