Bozo The Eater

bozo

I get it from my mother. I read obituaries. There, I said it.

Now WaPo made it even easier for me to get my “in memoriam” fix – Post Mortem, the WaPo obit blog. Yes, there are so many blogs on WaPo’s website (scroll down to the middle of the page and click on View All News Columns & Blogs, I count 30) that there is even a web log for the dead.

Regardless, that’s how I stumbled upon the death of Eddie “Bozo” Miller, an “icon of gluttony.”

Check out the full obit here, but below are some of his eating highlights:

In 1963, he downed 27 chickens (2-pound pullets) at Trader Vic’s restaurant in San Francisco, a feat that earned him $10,000 and led to a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the “world’s greatest trencherman,” or heavy eater.

He once downed 30 pounds of meatloaf made from elk, buffalo and other game. In another test, he ate 324 pieces of ravioli and said that he could have eaten more but that the restaurant ran out. He also guzzled two quarts of whiskey in an hour.

In his heyday, he said, he beat a lion in a martini-drinking contest.

“Some guy from the circus came into the restaurant — Reno Barsocchini’s, I think — with a lion on a leash,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I drank them out of a glass, and they put the martinis on a soup plate for the lion. I maybe had about a dozen. The lion, he kept lapping them up until he just fell asleep.”

Paris vs. Sofia Champagne in a Can Smackdown

wine-in-can.jpg

OK, I promise not to write about Champagne in a can every single day. No, that’s a lie, I can’t promise any such thing. When there is breaking Champagne-in-a-can news, ES will always bring it to you.

Since SoGood turned us on to the new Paris Hilton-endorsed CiaC yesterday, Brian was desperate to get some for his NYE shindig. While it’s mostly unavailable in this country so far, he did discover that failed actress/successful director Sofia Coppola has her own, slightly less slutty celeb-endorsed fake wine product.

Produced by Francis Ford Coppola’s eponymous wine company, Sofia is a tiny little can of bubbly that, according to the packaging, is both petulant and revolutionary. And let me tell you, both of those claims hold up.

As you can see from the before and after photos after the jump, I was quite skeptical at first, but was ultimately pleased with this odd concoction, which tastes sort of like a fine Champagne cut with cherry Kool-aid. And, it even comes with a fun little juice-box-esque straw.

Anthony Bourdain is Your Eater of the Year

bourdaindonut.jpg

He can always see you…

Despite certain commenters protestations that he is so over already, and others’ pleas that he needs to get off the book tours and back into the kitchen, there was virtually no contest: Anthony Bourdain is the 1st Annual Endless Simmer Eater of the Year.

With 450 of you voting, Mr. Bourdain more than doubled his nearest competitor, Joey Chestnut.

Padma Lakshmi came in a respectable third, cementing her often contentious status as a bona fide eater. Al Gore, meanwhile, had to settle for his frequent position as always the nominee, never the top dog.

Thanks for voting – and don’t forget to send us news on your favorite eaters throughout 2008. In the meantime, we’ll keep you updated on the many exploits of the talented Mr. Bourdain.

Want One of those Lattes

Responding to repeated reader requests for increased celebrity eating coverage, ES-NYC headquarters has dispatched a roving team of reporters to scour Manhattan’s streets for breaking news of what celebs are eating and drinking on a daily basis. The following real-time report comes in from our crack photo-journalist Brian:

This is a picture of what I think are Rufus Wainwright‘s legs while he
puts “sugar in the raw” into what I think was a latte at the starbucks on 24th
Street in Manhattan. I think…

Take that, CNN I-reports. If you catch a celeb (or quasi-celeb) consuming something (anything) send your shots to info@endlesssimmer.com

UPDATE!! More from our celebrity stalkographer:

8.5 million people and I run into rufus wainwright twice. This time at
the met prior to seeing war and peace. Again, I only get his legs.
He’s on the right (I think), and wearing the same bad shoes that he
was wearing in starbucks. I think…

No, this is not a joke. Yes, Brian is the shyest celebrity stalker ever.

For the record, Rufus was not eating anything at the Opera.
