Cheflebrity Smörgåsbord: Susie Fogelson Needs a Virtual Heimlich

cook

The latest and greatest news about celebrity chefs, served up buffet style.

– The new Food Network Wii game, Cook or Be Cooked!, will make you a world-class chef in the same way that Wii Sports has turned you into a professional athlete.  Remember: video bowling ain’t exercise, chubby.

– Salman Rushdie is reportedly still obsessed with Padma Lakshmi.  That’s a stunning lack of willingness to “live in the moment” displayed by someone who was wanted dead my millions of people.

After the jump:  A murder in the publishing business, Bobby Flay is moving on up and a celeb chef shows us that it’s never too late.

ES To-Eat List

nytaste
Eaters mingle with star chefs at New York Taste.

We’re constantly getting news of various delicious events crossing our virtual desks here at ES, and we figured we should probably start sharing them with you. So here’s our first list of upcoming edible events we’re already drooling over:

Wed. Oct 21 (TONIGHT!): David Sax speaks about his book Save the Deli at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, Washington, DC. (look out for local celebrities in attendance.)

Thurs. Oct 29 – Sun. Nov. 1: Boo and Brew Gourmet Getaway. The best of Vermont all in one weekend: gourmet meals at Good Commons coupled with Long Trail beer brewing and a local cheese tour, plus Halloween scariness like a corn maze and hay rides. Transportation from NYC included. Plymouth, Vermont.

Mon. Nov 2: New York Taste: New York magazine serves up food from 40 of NYC’s top chefs — Dan Barber, Govind Armstrong, Morimoto, etc…basically everyone you’ve ever seen on Top Chef. Skylight, Manhattan. (we’ll be there – say hi!)

Wed. Nov 4: James Beard meets Jersey. At this benefit dinner, past James Beard Award winners cook up some fanciness in West Orange, New Jersey.

Sat Nov. 7: The 5,000 Egg Giant Omelette Celebration. Yes, that’s 5,000 eggs. Don’t really need to hype this one up anymore, do I? Abeville, Louisiana.

Sat Nov. 14: Winter coming doesn’t mean beer festival season is over. The Great International Beer Festival kicks off in Providence, Rhode Island.

What else should we be eating and drinking over the next month?? Let us know.

guy_fieri

The latest and greatest news about celebrity chefs, served up buffet style.

David Chang and Anthony Bourdain, on the rampage.  In their sights: cupcakes and Guy Fieri.

– And if the verbal bitch-slap wasn’t enough, poor Guy gets the SNL treatment (fairly well done by Bobby Moynihan), only to be picked clean by ravenous birds.

After the jump:  As much Steingarten as you can handle,  hot food/cold feet and real, honest to goodness cooking on your television.

Cheflebrity Smörgåsbord: “I’m Your Number One Fan, Food Network”

misery

The latest and greatest news about celebrity chefs, served up buffet style.

– Ego or smart marketing? Super Chef takes a swipe at the new “I Love Food Network” fan site, which was created by Food Network itself.

– Always thinking ahead…auditions for the next Top Chef are coming soon. Also on its way, a show called Chef Academy, which promises to be nowhere as entertaining as Tool Academy.

After the jump:  foodie concert groupies, Padma’s lazy Sunday and world domination featuring Alton Brown and Rachael Ray.

Feed Us Back: Comments of the Week

edible flowers

– Me thinks foraging for edible flowers is the next locavore food trend. Jakesg:

I was camping out at a friend’s farm near La Center, Washington (State) earlier this summer and when we all awoke he had prepared a breakfast of squash flowers. They were breaded and stuffed with an amazing omelet. Uneffinreal.

erica:

i don’t know about marigolds, but i freaking love nasturtiums.

– Are rice cookers cheating? ES readers say no way. Summer:

Using a rice cooker can’t possibly be considered cheating! Rice cookers are standard equipment in Asian kitchens, so in my opinion, it’s not cheating any more than it would be cheating to use an electric stove to boil water for pasta. I dearly love my rice cooker, and use it several times a week.

– And of course every ESer has their own theory about who got Padma Knocked up:

Breaking Gossip: Padma Expecting Mini-Padma

padma lakshmi pregnant

Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah. Stop the presses. Or whatever the online equivalent is. Keep the presses going, I guess.

Grub Street points us towards the “Moms and Babies” section of US Weekly’s website (yes, it’s an entire section), where the latest item is about close friend of ES PADMA LAKSHMI. Yes, it’s what you’re thinking:

Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi is pregnant, her rep confirms.

So much to discuss! What does this mean for her sitcom deal? When will the Top Chef-testants have a “cook for pregnant Padma challenge?” Where is she registered?!?

Oh right, the gossip part. US goes on to call Padma’s pregnancy “nothing short of a medical miracle” due to her endometriosis (unclear exactly how much of an exaggeration that statement is). But furthermore:

The baby’s father has not been revealed. Online reports have speculated Manu Nathan is the dad, but her rep denies that, telling Us he’s Lakshmi’s cousin.

Weird! I had no idea Padma was dating her cousin. Or that she was back together with Rushdie! Or that the baby is Bourdain‘s!

Feel free to continue unsubstantiated rumor-mongering in the comments.

Cheflebrity Smörgåsbord: Gordo Gets Animated

gordon-ramsey-claymation

The latest and greatest news about celebrity chefs, served up conveniently buffet style.

– There is going to be a Gordon Ramsay stop-motion animated series.  Why?  Because even Fox reality show producers aren’t over-the-top enough to insert cartoon sound effects when he starts hurling cookware.

Guy Fieri is marketing a line of knives called “Knuckle Sandwich.”  Take a moment and think about what they might look like.  Now go check them out.  Yep, even douchier than you imagined.

After the jump:  the year of the culinary blockbuster films continue, Tyra goes crazy(-ier) for truck food and Disney brings in the foodies.
