The Toby Young Insult Tracker – Week 5

 judges.jpg

That’s the Toby that we know and love tolerate until Gail’s return.

Yep, the opinionated Briton was a bit more vocal this week, which made for some fun repartee around the judges’ table during the tasting and provided me with some fodder for an actual column this week.  Mr. Young, you have my thanks.

But before we get on to the insult tallies, I want to take a minute to discuss the top prize this week.

I’m convinced that Stefan took home the best weekly prize…definitely the best of the season and likely the best in the entire run of Top Chef.

It’s hard to overstate the esteem in which Eric Ripert is held within the culinary community.  The chance to follow him around and learn from him in his kitchen would be like an aspiring rocker in the ’60s getting to sit in Abbey Road Studio for a week or so.

I’m sure all of the chef’testants have their eyes on the big prize, but getting into the Ripper’s good graces could end up being worth more in the long run than capturing the top spot for the season.

Anyway, let’s get down to business.

ES Picks the Next Food Network Star

As you know, we’re totally addicted to reality food TV. But Top Chef is almost over, Hell’s Kitchen is a predictable highlight reel of Gordon Ramsay disgustedly spitting out the contestants’ “signature dishes,” and Chopped doesn’t even count.  I had it on last weekend and I couldn’t pay attention long enough to determine the exact rules of the show. That, of course, leaves us with The Next Food Network Star, which also veers towards the boring side, but won’t this season if we have our say!

You see, while Top Chef mines the finest restaurants in the land for its contestants and Hell’s Kitchen chooses folks who already work in the food service industry, TNFNS goes the “salt of the earth” route and encourages people like you and me to give it a try.  All you need is a video camera and a dream.

On the season premiere of TNFNS they air a montage of submissions, highlighting the most unique/unusual of them and stressing how the eight or ten that we’re actually going to see on the show were culled from THOUSANDS of outstanding entries.  When I see this, I just think of the poor production assistants who had to suffer through hours of terrible videos, looking for someone — anyone — that they can mark down as a”maybe.”

Fortunately, Food Network has decided to share with us some of the entries by posting submission videos on their site, and I don’ t feel so bad for those PAs anymore, because these videos are a-mazing.  And, if you have some spare time on your hands and are in need of a good laugh, these vids are about twice as entertaining as anything currently airing on the Food Network.

As of my last check, they’re up to 17 pages, with each page sporting 36 videos.  That’s a whole lotta entries, but we dug through them to find the best of the best.  A few cautionary tales of what not to do with your entry video, and at least one that is a no-brainer to make the final cut…

The Toby Young Insult Tracker – Week 4

 toby-young.jpg

Have you seen this man?

His name is Toby Young.  He is a well-known food critic and was, until recently, a judge on Top Chef.

We were all a little confused when he stepped in for Gail Simmons, but he quickly made a name for himself with the witty bons mots that we’ve been chronicling for the past few weeks.

Apparently Toby Young was fired from the show with very little fanfare.  Sure, there was someone on this week’s episode who looked almost exactly like Young (except for those colored sunglasses…really?).  But this impostor offered none of the usual fodder for our scoreboard.

Alas, it was the same Toby Young and, unfortunately for us, he stuck to the basics, providing straightforward feedback on each of the dishes and only a few very mild criticisms.  Why bother showing up if you’re not even going to try?

But, because we are a slave to consistency, let’s go to the tote board:

Top Chef Exit Interview: Episode 10

 referee-padma.jpg

Top Chef was quite the party this week, with Super Bowl dishes, the return of Spike, and Padma-as-slutty-ref. But of course, one chef’testant had to pack their knives and leave. We catch up with them, after the jump.
