Hott Links: Best BBQ in America

LexingtonNC

So Budget Travel recently asked me to complete the very difficult assignment of writing about The Best Barbecue Joints in America. Tough life, I know. Unfortunately they didn’t pay me to go to every one of these places, just to research them and get really, really obscenely hungry. So take a read if you’re a meat eater and feel like getting your drool on. Don’t forget to do that thing where you tell me what an idiot I am for missing ______.

And just to piss off all you Southern-fried traditionalists, here are four more stops for BBQ fans who aren’t up for actually leaving NYC:

Help DC Eat Through Snowpocalypse II

As readers around the country may have heard (just a few times), it’s snowing in the Mid-Atlantic. Again. Because not everyone can just eat snow, here’s a chance for all you DC-based simmer sauces to help out some neighbors:

On Thursday, February 11th, Food & Friends needs 20 volunteers to deliver meals, especially those with 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Those without cars would be very much appreciated in the kitchen! (ed: emphasis added), and it would be great if they could come between 8 and 10 a.m.

More Info here.

When you’re done helping, why not feed yourself? Check out Britannia’s insanely impressive map mash-up of DC restaurants that are open through the snowpocalypse.

We know everyone and their mom has already asked you to contribute to their own personal Haiti fundraiser, but allow us a quick shout-out to a very unpainful way to give.

The crew over at Post Punk Kitchen (led by Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World author Chandra Moskowitz), have organized a nationwide series of vegan bake sales this weekend to raise money for various charities aiding victims of the earthquake. Check out PPK to find a bake sale site in DC, NYC, or near you.

Will It Waffle?

Despite being total Williams Sonoma geeks, most of us ESers tend to live in tiny city apartments, which means we shy away from buying unitaskers. But that doesn’t mean you have to cook every meal in the same cast iron pan, because with a little creativity you can turn that unitastker into a multitasker.

Which brings us to our favorite new food blog, Waffleizer, in which blogger Dan and some friends answer the eternal question, Will It Waffle? That is, can foods traditionally cooked on the stove or oven be made in a waffle iron? And might that in fact make them better?

As you can probably guess, from hamburgers to hash browns to s’mores, the answer is always yes.

Trendwatching: Tea Party Edition

Whatever happened to coffee?

Has anyone else noticed you can barely check into the food world nowadays without bumping into someone going on and on about tea? I’ve been in a number of restaurants lately where the after-dinner menus featured “specialty teas” alongside the espresso and brandy. Bon Appetit is telling us to infuse our food with tea. There are tons of blogs about tea, blogs just about green tea — hell there are even blogs about tea cosies.

Over at Oyster Locals, I checked out three new NYC tea houses to see what all the fuss is about. They all featured some far-out flavors, and I certainly finished my teas, but I have to admit I have yet to find one tea that totally knocked my socks off.

So I’m wondering — do all you foodies out there get as excited about tea as you do about say, coffee and cocktails? I mean, I’ll drink a cuppa, but I’m still not totally sold that it’s the greatest thing since sliced bacon.

Thoughts?

Another Sign the Foodiepocalypse is Upon Us

How to know when your kid is watching too much Food Network, via Overheard in New York:

Kid #1:

Paper beats rock. BAM! Your rock is blowed up!

Kid #2:

“Bam” doesn’t blow up, “bam” makes it spicy. Now I got a SPICY ROCK! You can’t defeat that!

Not sure if this is upsetting or awesome. (Hat tip: Alex)
