Waffling Gone Wild! Top 10 Craziest Waffle Iron Recipes

Don’t worry – this is not another post all about breakfast. One thing that was on the top of my list when my wife and I registered for our wedding was a waffle iron. Not only do I enjoy a good Belgian waffle, but I can also appreciate the versatility of a waffle iron. Use it to cook paninis, grilled cheese, and much more! Check out our top ten sweet and savory ways to use a waffle iron.

The Endless Road Trip, Philly: A Waffle to End All Waffles

At Philly’s new V Street, the all-vegan menu is inspired by street food from around the world, fusing flavors from as far afield as Hungary, India, Peru and the Philippines into an amazing array of meat-free snacks like jerk trumpet mushrooms and harissa-grilled cauliflower mixed up with spiced avocado, olive salad and chermoula, an intensely flavorful North African marinade.

The cocktails are particularly off-the-wall—the “Cruz Control” mixes tequila with horchata, lime and tepache—a Mexican fermented pineapple drink—but the true crazy prize has to go to this dessert waffle: it’s layered with rich chocolate ganache, gooey bites of banana, vegan ice cream and a chunky miso caramel, with Sriracha peanuts and syrup poured over the whole thing. Yes, please.

Friday Fuck-Up: Awful Waffle

First of all, did anyone catch the sweet Salute Your Shorts reference I just made?  No?  Okay.  Moving on.

You know what bugs me? Recipes that use only part of a can of something.  For example, I have a pizza sauce recipe that calls for 2 tablespoons of tomato paste. If I actually follow those instructions, I am left with most of a can of tomato paste to put in the fridge, where I will undoubtedly find it two weeks later covered with a layer of white, suspicious fuzz. Mmm.

So, it was with this in mind that, when I set out to make pumpkin waffles last week (that’s right, pumpkin waffles, not pumpkin spice waffles), and the recipe called for 2/3 of a can of pumpkin, I figured, what the heck?  I dumped in the whole can. And…well, you can see what happened above.

In the annals of Friday F-ups, this one certainly won’t go down as one of the worst, as once I picked the waffle bits off the maker, the whole thing still tasted great.  Plus, as I always say…

When life gives you runny waffle batter, make pancakes.
