Attack of the Meme: Keep Calm and Eat

During World War II the Brits came up with the slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On” to “raise the morale of the British public in the event of invasion,” according to Wikipedia. The propaganda posters never ended up being used, but have since spawned plenty of imitations: from the sweet to the naughty.

Of course, there’s been many “keep calm” posters created to show a love of food and booze. Because, who are we kidding, it’s super hard to keep calm when thinking about eating and drinking.

Is That a Banana in Your Cupcake?

After all the chocolate and beer desserts of last few posts, I thought I would lighten it up some and make something non-chocolate. You know, get back to basics like pie or cupcakes — better yet let’s just fuse the two for some banana cream pie cupcakes.

Let me say, it’s like finding nirvana between the pleats! On your way, you’ll find a vanilla cupcake stuffed with some banana cream filing and topped with some good ol’ fashion whip cream. To round it all out I rimmed the whip cream with some crumbled coconut and pecan graham cracker crust and then drizzled it with some caramel sauce — and done! Enjoy.

Martha’s Baked: Three Questions for Ms. Stewart

Don’t worry, you’ve not stumbled upon some other cooking blog, but yes, you are seeing who you think you’re seeing.

You’ll have to excuse my boasting for a moment, but I just had a chance to speak with Martha FREAKIN Stewart. Hallmark Channel premieres Martha’s new show, Martha Bakes this week. The thirteen-week series focuses solely on the art of baking, with each episode highlighting a singular theme. Nothing too-too-fancy here. For example, the first episode is all about yellow cake, and as someone who isn’t a very good baker, it was nice to have a pro give a 101 tutorial.

Keep reading for more on what Martha has to say about her new show and all things baked.

Bacon Streusel Maple Cream Cheese Cupcakes

Stats, spreads, percentages…um, let’s talk about what really matters during the Super Bowl. Commercials, the half-time show and of course — food! All the other stuff is extraneous, unless of course you win the pool, in which case football is great.

As for the food, the Super Bowl calls for a dessert sophisticated enough to bring to an event, but crowd-pleasing enough to…well, please a crowd. Enter the Super Bowl Cupcake.

The streusel on top framing that thick cloud of maple cream cheese frosting is not your everyday streusel. That my friends, is crushed bacon wrapped in some cayenne and brown sugar for a sweet and spicy flavoring, then paired up with some crushed almonds for added nutty goodness. This is the kind of killer combination that will make you glad you publicly declared to eat better for your New Year’s resolution.

Feed Us Back: Comments of the Week

– Britannia recently mapped out the different kinds of bacon for us, but reader Harleytexas cries foul:

Canadian bacon is an American invention that no one in Canada buys because we have peameal/back bacon which is way better.

True? The commenter’s name doesn’t lend an awful lot of cred regarding Canadian issues, but I’d sure like to hear more about this back bacon. Looks tasty.

– Most of you agree with gansie’s protestations that there is no such thing as a giant cupcake, although erica offers a potential line of defense:

I’m no expert but I’ve heard cupcake snobbists saying things like “a cupcake has a finer crumb,” though I’m inclined to agree that a giant cupcake is just cake.

– And everyone agrees that cream cheese saves the day, but Michaela picks a fight:

I think the real question is, whipped or regular? I can’t stand the regular stuff, but I’d take whipped cream cheese any day.

Blashpemy, I say. Others?
