Feed Us Back: Comments of the Week

It’s come to our attention that while all of you surely read every Endless Simmer post carefully and in its entirety, some of you may not have the time to scroll through and read the comments on every story. While we clearly disagree with your decision, we’ve decided to make it easier for you by providing this weekly roundup of the very best of ES commenters. This week:

MamaBear raised an excellent point in the Cindy McCain/Michelle Obama Cookie War:

Whooooooooops! They BOTH screwed up. The winner ALWAYS goes to the one that posts a chocolate chip recipe. REALLY! Go back over the years.. and you’ll find.. the spouse of every elected President since they started doing this cookie contest.. has posted the good old.. Chocolate Chip Recipe! REALLY!! I’m NOT kidding! lol

– Several of you abstained from our bacon cocktail contest (Maidelitala: I refuse to vote on account I might vomit), but the rest of you were entranced by the idea of bacon-infused bourbon. JoeHoya, being JoeHoya, actually went home and tried it:

I had both bourbon and bacon grease sitting at home, just being awesome independently without any knowledge of each others’ presence. So I decided to introduce them and see what happened.

The verdict: inconclusive. On first taste, the bourbon really didn’t seem to pick up too much of the bacon flavor.

I’m wondering if that’s because I used Cedarbrook Farms bacon from the Dupont Market. They smoke their bacon but don’t cure it, so it doesn’t have any of the nitrates that commercial bacon does. It gives the bacon a much meatier (but less classically ‘bacon’) flavor, so it’s possible that the grease from it is less potent, as well.

The good news is that the bourbon is not ruined by any stretch of the imagination, so I may have to break down and pick up some store-bought bacon to give it another try.

I’ll keep you posted.

– And finally, BS’s cheating confession regarding garlic powder was met with a resounding round of boos and hisses:

Vio: Shame on you, BS. Garlic powder is only good on buttered toast.

miked: ya know bs, the most upsetting thing is the lying/willful disregard for the truth.

MissGinsu: Powdered garlic is for spice rubs, apocalypse kits and deep-woods hiking trips.

BS’s Mom: I’m shocked, shocked…BS didn’t get this from his mother.

i nominate BS’s mom for comment of the week. the torment of a mother who lost control of her garlic-powder-using son is terribly painful to read and must have been heartbreaking to admit.

Nice… I’m glad you all are starting a “comments of the week” section. Many of my wittiest commentaries on ES have been under appreciated in recent months, but I expect vast improvement due to the advent of the Comments of the Week section. Brava!
