Attached is my blog attempt. It is probably too long, so feel free to trim it, format it, whatever, but post that sh*t, make that sh*t, and then fart a few times..oh wait..girls don’t fart.

enjoy.

I recently returned from 21 days in the lush cloud forests of Costa Rica. Of the 21 days there, I ate beans, rice or both 17 of those days. You might think that after three weeks of the same food I’d be ready for something new. You’d be right. But after two weeks back in my home country, once again I was craving that hearty staple of Central American cuisine.

Tarragon With the Wind

Back in the days before blogs became a part of the MSM, and BS and I (and 80 for that matter) were just lowly grunts at a political polling firm, I spent my work hours chatting about food — with my officemate, El. Okay, maybe things aren’t that different.

Regardless, she taught me the wonders of avocado, tri-tip steak, (can you tell she’s from California?!?!) and chicken salad with tarragon.

El created her dish with oven-cooked chicken and fresh tarragon, so you’ll have to pardon my lazy version. (*Alert* shameless plug:) Maybe she’ll even grace us with a recipe of her own one day.

Amaryllis

pretty flower

That kinda-cute co-worker with an offbeat sense of humor you’re mildly interested in, but you know you could do better…that’s Amaryllis. This tiny Latino restaurant with pink lighting and a strictly Spanish-language jukebox is the restaurant you pretend is better than it is, simply because it’s always around. Whether the chicken is in the form of pollo asado or fajitas, it’s a bit on the dry side; but, live the decadent life and order the lush fried plantains. Start off with the wondrous pupusa appetizer—two fried dough patties filled with pork and cheese, plated with a tangy tomato-flavored slaw and refried beans—or save your appetite for the plato tipico: seasoned grilled beef, two pupusas, buttery white rice, beans and sliced avocado.
For: A neighborhood joint that is almost the jam.

Entrees: $7-$12. 202-483-2027. 1654 Columbia Rd, NW.

Okay, so don’t tell anyone, but I actually didn’t start eating Mexican food til I was late in my college years. My fam just never really went out for Mexican; we were more the Italian strip mall, order-in Chinese suburban family. I guess the closest thing was my brother ordering the chicken fajitas at TGI Fridays.

Regardless, now my fridge is always filled with something that has an Hispanic feel to it – jalepenos, chipotles, tortillas… By using the plethora of Hispanic markets down the street to my advantage, I can easily throw together one of my go-to dinners – tortilla pizza. Tortilla pizza works best as a leftover haven.

This Little Piggy Has Hair and Claws

Here at endless simmer, we have readers in 513 cities around the world, from Bangalore, India to Bangor, Maine (it’s true, Google told us!). We wanna make sure it doesn’t get too localized feeling here, so we’re asking for some updates from our ESers around the globe.

These pics come from our friend Maya, who just returned form Peru, where she feasted on this succulent roast guinea pig. As many of you may remember from third grade, GPs are not pork at all, but actually rodents.

Maya says the GP tastes just like chicken, if chicken had claws and hairs and was tough to chew on and actually pretty gross. And no, they are not stuffed, that is just the incredibly appetizing natural intestines. Thanks Maya!
