How To Make Your Water Sparkle
For Liza’s birthday, her mom (Ruby Girl) bought her Sodastream, a DIY sparkling water maker. Liza is an avid sparkling water drinker and a major environmentalist, so this gift was right-on. The Sodastream machine also turns water into: cola, ginger ale, tonic and lemonade. While the upfront price tag is a bit high – like most things green – the end result will both save on dollars and waste – also like most things green.

How long do the carbonator thingies last? How much are the refills? And are they easy to find? And do the refills have anything nasty and toxic that shouldn’t go into a landfill? This might go on a b-day wishlist.
Good question Nee Nee – If you are like me, and have about 6-8 giant carbinated waters a day, you may go through a CO2 tank in 10 days, but usually they last about 2 weeks (and again, that is with a LOT of use). In DC you can take them to get refilled at Sur la Table and it costs $14 to refill. According to the website: “One SodaStream carbonator makes 60 or 110 liters, equivalent to 170 or 310 aluminum cans! When empty, the carbonator is refilled and reused..”
Thanks! Excellent to know that they can be refilled at Sur la Table. If I’m in the neighborhood of a Whole Foods I buy their sixers of the WF brand sparkling water, but each one for the last 2 months has been flat. Clearly it’s time to take control of my carbonated water destiny.
i can’t say how much i love my soda stream. i drink about one to two bottles worth a day and a carbonation tank lasts me at least two months, even the smallest one.
i would like to add that i have in the past mentioned the awesome airlock noise… which apparently these more expensive ones don’t have. (i have the cheapest version).
