Stalking Padma in the Kitchen: The Appetizer

padma-flautas.JPG

Gansie recently got her hands on a copy of Padma Lakshmi’s cookbook Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet, which of course I promptly stole. As has been mentioned countless times on ES, while this pretty face may not be a trained chef, girl really can cook. The book is a healthy 250 pages of recipes ranging from simplistic snacks (grilled cheese toastie with portobello and bacon) to complex crap I can’t even imagine making, like Moroccan b’stella. Of course, there are also ample photos of Padma salaciously chowing down on a fried chicken drumstick and the like.

While I’m not gonna do a full cookbook-through on this one for ya’ll, I am trying a few of the most enticing recipes, from appetizer through dessert course, so here’s my first attempt.

Feed Us Back: Comments of the Week

The Endless Simmer world was introduced to the Capital Cooking world this week, leading to comments such as those from Yvo:

So… is she naked under an apron, or is that a dress meant to look like an apron?

…and Brian to profess his undying love:

i think i love her. i don’t care what you think of me.

BS and photog Brian teamed up to bring us another celebrity shot that didn’t include a face. At least this time it wasn’t just their feet. Attempting to guess the secret celebrity’s identity, Brenna said:

It’s Sway, the mtv reporter, i’m 100% positive!

That was my guess, too, especially since he’s from Oakland. But according to Brian that is incorrect. So keep those guesses coming in.

The Answer Key

When I tell my ES readers that all will be revealed Monday, I generally mean it, just not this time. So I got a little lazy, sue me. It’s the summer anyways.

Ok, I admit this wasn’t the most revealing mystery food ever. The picture was taken close enough so as to resemble either cat food or wet peanut brittle. The reality? When 80p is cooking, think fish. In this case, salmon.

It Tastes Like a Rainbow, Part II

Editors Note: Our girl Vi can now not stay away from blogging. Vi shows off her graphic design/tech/artistic side by bringing you this a-mazingly insane video.

byline: Vi

A coworker of mine sent me the link for this short film from the Home of the Twisted Films of PES. I’ve never had toys make me so hungry and I’m sure the final spaghetti dish does taste like rainbows! This film actually influenced me to add more color in my dishes and not make so many white, brown and green dishes when a little bit of tri-colored couscous can easily bring some life to my dinner.

Capital Cooking

capcooking1.jpg

I barely claim to be an authority on food, so I don’t even claim a little bit to be an authority on food TV. It’s like mastering Art History, which I think is the most demanding major. I mean, not only do you have to know what looks good on canvass (or sculpture or photograph) and the theories and techniques behind the physical demands of the “sport,” but also about the artist’s personality, the personal history of the artist, the time in history the artist lived and what was going on during that period (war, famine, medicine, sex, drugs, relationship with his/her mother), the artist’s influences, who was influenced by that artist or movement…I think you know where I’m going. And, fine, I really wanted to be an Art History major but instead of abandoning my PolySci studies, I learned what I could about art by being *that girl* in the back of the room, trying to distinguish her left from right while changing the slides. Yes, gansie was the slide girl in your Modern Art 101.

Well, if I lost you…

Who’s That Eating?

mystery-celebrity.jpg

You all responded so well to our Where’s Waldo contest last week that we thought we’d go ahead and make it a regular feature. Except this time, our mystery eater isn’t an ES commenter, he’s a genuine real life celebrity. So who is the mystery eater? Here are your clues:

– He’s at Habana Outpost Eco-eatery in Fort Greene, Brooklyn

– He drank a strawberry margarita. Food unknown because he forgot to take his meal ticket from the cashier to the cooks.

– He is a native of Oakland, California.

Guesses in the comments, please. Winner gets a free something (maybe).

Many thanks to our very own celeb-stalker, Brian.

Have you seen the back of a famous eater? Send us your shots!

SNDC: Veggie Shrimp Edition

dsc03459.JPG

My SNDC (Sunday Night Dinner Club) convened this past weekend at the home of our only member who owns a tool-kit, we’ve not been getting together as often as we usually do due to summer travels but this weekend was a must, our good friend T2 turned twenty-errr, anyway. T2 is one of those veggie types, and when we cook SNDC the veggie dishes are usually cooked by the birthday boy but as it was his birthday we couldn’t really ask him to cook, could we? I decided to theme the dinner on tomatoes, I wrote a few weeks back about the tomato scare that the country has been under so I thought I would laugh in the face of danger and host a tomato themed dinner, I had it planned for over a week and then on Friday the FDA cleared tomatoes of salmonella, damn you government types for thwarting my danger plan.

I have to admit something to you all, up until this past weekend I was a virgin… a Dupont Farmers Market virgin that is! I had never been before and wow, very impressed. So on Sunday morning with coffee in hand, I was your picture perfect foodie, buying organic carbon-footprint free produce and cheeses for my dinner.

After the jump, recipes and pictures of the four tomato base dishes (keep in mind these recipes are for 12 people).
