Yeah, I take the middle road. I tip about half my normal amount, especially if I am picking up from a real restaurant, not a take out place.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not buying it. I understand it involves work to prepare a meal - that's why I'm paying you money. I try to be a generous tipper when it's appropriate, but I don't agree with this expansion of tipping - now you're supposed to tip on a cup of coffee or an ice cream cone - next thing we know, you'll have to tip the person ringing you up at the grocery store. Yeah, I get that people don't get paid enough, but food is expensive enough that places should pay their employees well, rather than customers expected to add on a dollar for every thing they buy. It's a tradition when sitting down to a meal to express gratitude to the person waiting on you for an hour, and asking someone to drive food to your house is an outrageous enough proposition that you should tip. But take-out, sorry, not tip-worthy.

alright, BS. i normally don't like to openly dispute with you, but this warrants a rebuttal. sure, it sucks to tip when you've opted to go pick something instead of getting it delivered. but its actually a lot of work to put something together for take-out, or at least it was when I was a server. you had to put in the order, check on it, put it in the to-go boxes, make sure you had everything, get the drinks, put in all the plasticware... plus this takes time from tending to your other tables. its work thats deserving of a tip! esp. if it involves making milkshakes. good lord were they a pain in the ass.

I don't tip on takeaway and I stand by that. Tipping is for when you bring the food to me, whether to my table or my house. And I would be willing to guarantee that if you ask the takeout taxi driver to deliver a tip back to the restaurant for you, that tip is not gonna make it back there.

5 bucks isn't bad at all, except it now brings up a new kind of etiquette question. If you are the type that tips on takeaway (some people don't), can you or should you ask the take out taxi to tip the food preparers? Or should you say "to hell with them" since they don't offer delivery and they want to make us leave the comforts of our homes/couches?
