They've set the bar pretty low - aiming to have it done sometime in "early 2009" when the fire occurred at the end of April 2007. Seems like two years would be enough time to rebuild from the ground up, if you really wanted to get it done.

Market Lunch - bluebucks and crabcakes.

Awesome article. It's awesome how much DC has changed in 10 years. I could not believe that our bassackwards gov't actually handled a crises in a responsible and logical manner (well, apparently so anyway).

Fine Sweet Shoppe also does the best croissants I have found on the Hill - and at $1.50 each, they're pretty reasonable.

FYI - The folks selling the cider and fresh veggies outside the East Hall (Toigo Farms, I think) have decided that they will no longer be selling at Eastern Market if the city decides to keep 7th Street closed on weekends. They feel business is suffering too much because folks who used to drive to EM from out of town are staying away due to decreased parking availability. It'll be interesting to see what effect that has on plans to continue the closure while construction on the South Hall goes on all next year.

When I used to live on 8th and G, I swore by Chat's. Market Poultry is great- on Sundays, everyone wears Redskins jerseys and the offer specials. They're also great about special orders for the holidays. And the mini chocolate chip cookies from the Fine Sweet Shoppe are absurdly addictive

Great article, Gansie! I'm glad you were able to format it and repost it here for everyone who wasn't lucky enough to catch it in the Onion.

Gotta love Eastern Market - though I was more than a little frustrated when I found out they were closed yesterday (after a 15 minute walk in the windy cold).
